Kenny! No last name necessary. Say it on any playground in NYC and everybody knows who you’re talking about. Even the young cats who are on the come up, if they ball on the asphalt of the concrete jungle’s five boroughs, they’ve heard about the legend of Kenny Anderson.
In the most recent issue of Bounce Magazine, #21, we sat down with Kenny to unearth the story of his formative years. To really understand how the playground gave us one of the greatest phenoms in NYC history and hear from the man, in his own words, you need to cop the issue immediately. Read More »
Basketball, broken down to its simplest compound, is about scoring more buckets than the team you’re playing against. The Semi-Automatic refers to players who leave bodies in their wake with their innate ability to get buckets. And no player in the history of the college game was more offensively blessed, or prolific, than the incomparable Pete Maravich, aka The Pistol. Read More »
The Dunk! The Ram! The Slam! The Bong! Whatever you want to call it, it’s an art form, birthed on the playground, that has revolutionized the way the game is played. And few college players were as spectacular with their aerial artistry as Harold Minor. Read More »
The Orlando Magic are back in the building, yet people seem to be a little confused. Everybody’s saying that they haven’t been to the finals since they had Shaq. How can it possible that mainstream media not fully understand how indescribably incredible a young Penny Hardaway was, and the role he played in the equation?
In early December of 1991, we received our first glimpse. We’d heard the whispers about the kid from the rough streets of Memphis, Tennessee a few years earlier while he was tearing up high school ball. But it was undeniably confirmed that the young man was, indeed, a supreme talent on the night of his NCAA debut as he collected 18 points, 15 rebounds, 4 blocks, 4 steals and 6 assists against DePaul. The New Jersey Nets are moving to Brooklyn. Period. Nets’ Owner Bruce C. Ratner insists the team will not stay in New Jersey. Newark Mayor Cory Booker, elected to office in May 2006, still remains hopeful in keeping the team in New Jersey.
Ratner has always shared his vision of the Nets moving to Brooklyn that has caused hype in the media, including interest by rapper Jay-Z who was born and raised in the Marcy Projects of Brooklyn section Bedford-Stuyvesant.
With the growing real estate market in Brooklyn. Ratner argues that the team would fit in well with garnered support for the proposed Barclays Center. Despite protests, the Nets’ Owner has used his political power in addition to his influence in the community to forward the project.
I had a week to think and reflect about the last NBA All Star Weekend. The result is that there were just a few things that go down in history: Shaq’s presentation, KryptoNate, Rudy Fernandez, Kobe and Shaq ‘friends for ever’… Anyway, I’ll have a good memory in the form of sneaker: the Adidas TS Lighthing Creator ASW09.
At first I thought that I couldn’t wear those colors, but then I realized that this was not the most important thing. The shoe is comfortable and functional. Now I have to look for a gold jersey to wear with those shoes perfectly. Anybody said Washington Wizards third uniform? Anybody said Agent Zero?
“I’m sorry Chris Jackson, You are for real!” -The Ali re-mix of the OutKast classic, Ms. Jackson
Every generation can lay claim to that one transcendant talent, a shooting star that scorched everything in his path en route to ascending the ladder of LEGEND. For some, their reign at the crescendo was long. For others, the view from the mountaintop was all too brief. For Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf, the artist formerly known as Chris Jackson, his extraordinary spontaneous combustion during two remarkable seasons at L.S.U. was enough to tickle the memories of those who witnessed his exploits for a lifetime.
With an arsenal that included an impeccable handle, more shakes than a fervent Beyonce dance routine, a bananas vertical leap, an underrated assist game that was overshadowed by his prolific scoring, lightning hands that thieved like Bernard Madoff and a hiccup-quick release on a jimmy that was as dependable as Oprah, Mahmoud sizzled retinas. Courtesy of an exclusive rights partnership with the NBA, adidas handles the duties of making All-Star Weekend an agreeable event for adoring fans, but more importantly, the extravaganza acts as a platform for new shoes and apparel. To celebrate the notable occasion, the brand dipped into The League’s illustrious back catalog to reissue the 1995 NBA All-Star Jerseys. ‘95 was the last time the ASG visited Phoenix, (the game returns to the desert in ‘09) and I’m glad to report the Three Stripes did these right!
