Kasib Powell is looking like Mario Elie before his “chips” run

In Bounce Edition #10, I did a story called “Definition of a Pro” that featured Kasib “Special K” Powell. Kasib played last year for the Miami Heat and earned a 1-year guaranteed deal before both sides decided to part ways. He ended up getting good money with Zhejiang Guangsha in China. In 13 games, Sib averaging 26 pts pg, 9 rebs pg, 4 asst pg, shooting over 50 percent from the 3pt-line. He’s home now and hungry for another NBA shot. I read it and thought: Mario “The Jedi” Elie, who came into the league at the age of 28 and became a defensive stopper and big game player. It’s a shame that most people’s enduring memory of Spree will center around the altercation and choking incident of his Golden State coach, P.J. Carlesimo.
For basketball purists, though, the lasting image of the man does not center around his unfortunate mistakes. Strictly isolating his on-court exploits, Spree was lightning in a bottle. He was simply a dynamic human dynamite stick from the first tick of the clock to the last. Read More »
