Kenny Graham’s orange and purple West 4th Street tournament banner hung along the East side fence Sunday afternoon as the sun shone brightly over the handballers in the background. On the south side of the park, women, as customary, occupied the 10 or so seats behind the basket and people dressed in all different styles crowded up against the West-side fence to catch a glimpse of this perennial warm-weather exhibition. My man Turk a.k.a. Trike sent me an email this week with this photo from the Daily News that ran an article on West 4th St. back in July 20, 1981. Here is his memory of it:
…#4 is me taking it to the hole and that’s Lionel Hollins [former Sixer and Blazer NBA guard] to my left with the beard. He played two games with us that year. To the far right you can barely see a young Kenny Graham [West 4th Tournament founder/director] who used to ref his own games… this photo was the highlight of my summer.
