Ascending from the Brownsville Projects, World B. Free (FKA Lloyd Bernard Free) combined asinine hops with a freaky asphalt ratchet to captivate aspiring hoopsters the world over. I never had the pleasure of seeing Free play personally, but accounts of him breaking cats while wearing a canvas lowtop on one foot and a mid on the other while proclaiming, “You haven’t seen this ‘ish before!” are both romantic and mystical. (Consequently, “The Prince of Midair” is among my favorite players that I’ve never seen play. After all, was he talking about his kicks or boogie…?) With twenty-nine different variations and themes in the bank, the original Chiefglider Low is set to return to the asphalt this coming summer.
