My esteemed colleague in the bouncemag.com cipher, the inimitable, intelligent professor of hoop-ology who goes by the moniker of Funkalot, suggested that this lovely soundtrack should accompany any discussion of the Chicago Bulls’ Manchild in the Promised Land, Derrick Rose, from here on out. As we transition into one of the most highly anticipated seasons in recent memory, my mind has been shifting into overdrive, thinking about some of the more memorable moments in my hoops-loving life. For those of us who are similarly afflicted, I need not explain to ecstatic rush of emotion and joy that overwhelms us as we witness these brilliant episodes of b-ball transcendence.
Caught up in the moment, you realize that not only are you watching a once-in-a-lifetime display, but you value the fact that these experiences will escort you through life, in the same way that birthdays, first kisses, senior proms, graduations and anniversary’s do. Read More »

It’s like the first time you heard Sucker MC’s, Eric B is President, Dougie and Slick Rick’s The Show or Pete Rock and CL Smooth’s They Reminisce , in that you knew that your life was irrevocably altered from that moment on. Read More »

Catch me in the midst of one of these magical events, like Jordan’s 63, Bernard King’s Christmas gift, Mo Cheeks running a team, Phi Slamma Jamma, a young Penny Hardaway on the come-up, the Fab Five or Lebron’s 48-Special and, if you didn’t know me, you’d swear that I’d just escaped from Bellevue, in serious need of meds and some padded walls.
In today’s installment of Machine Gun Funk, we take it back to the spring of 1988, when Dominique Wilkins and Larry Bird put on a show that will forever stand the test of time. Read More »
I was super tough in transition, ask former NBA All-Star Mark Jackson about his “D” against me at King Towers back in the day…
“The business.” It’s a term used when a player starts to flame broil his opponent on offense. Many players left like “cooked beef” from our gym back in the day, grilled and handled with a spatula by NBA pros, but real appreciative of having a place to test their skill. I truly remember how the comp helped a city get its rep as the breeding ground of the NBA hardcore player that willed their respective teams to the championship round. I miss that charcoaled flavor. During this All-Star Weekend, I reminisce about men like Mark Jackson, Kenny Smith, Anthony Mason, and Tony Campbell, all NBA All-Stars and championship round players who made NYC’s Jim Couch Foundation Open Gym a Pro Experience… Read More »
Basketball, broken down to its simplest compound, is about scoring more buckets than the team you’re playing against. The Semi-Automatic refers to players who leave bodies in their wake with their innate ability to get buckets. And once upon a time, not too long ago, Jay Williams took the college game by the throat with some fierce offensive weaponry. Read More »
As I watched the pre-game warm ups between the Celtics and the Bulls last night I noticed that Ben Gordon’s hamstring was in question. That type of injury is tough for a player like Gordon who relies heavily on his ability to burst and rock step off the chop. It brought back a memory I had a while back…
Times ago, at a place where time met pure ball, I had a chance to talk to Ben Gordon. Ben was a rising pro, recently out of Mount Vernon and headed to UCONN to build his game and rep. He came around my projects – Dyckman Houses – after a workout with Dyckman Coach, Evander Ford. In front of the building where I lived, we got to talking about creating space on the chop and the step back move. Read More »
