There were a lot of great dunks from Midnight Madness this year, but probably none better than Wagner’s Josh Thompson dunking over his mom. The 6-5 junior knew he had to bring it to win the contest – especially with Darryl Dawkins as one of the judges – and did just that with this dunk. Read More »
In case you haven’t been able to get through the gates, haven’t got there early enough or haven’t been following me on twitter (@LowerEastScribe), here’s a look at some of Team NIKE’s ill-action in the Heights

“THE HEART & SOUL OF NEW YORK CITY”
A K1X film by Kevin Couliau
Yes, it’s about that time. Rain, sleet and snow have made way for the sun, long evenings and fresh sneakers. Early may, when Europe’s hardwood champions have been crowned and the NBA playoffs shift into full gear, marks the inofficial start of the real basketball season: the streetball season! That’s when reputations are made, nicknames are born and every ballplayer naturally gravitates towards that “thump”, “thump” sound of his or her home court. Playground basketball is where it all started. Playground basketball is where talent is honed and friendships are made. It’s where neighborhoods gather and where skills and sweat are a currency. That’s especially true for the mecca of basketball, New York City. Nowhere else do streetball tournaments, players and games attract a quasi-religious following. Dollars, pride and bragging rights are on the line. Believe the hype!
Stanley Lumax from Converse got me hip to their new campaign with Shammgod. Shammgod recalls his childhood basketball regimen and “shaking his own shadow.”
I must say the MVP Puppets campaign has been one of the longest promotional stints Nike has employed in a long time. Its success equates to Penny Hardaway and his Lil Penny series in my opinion. Although the concept of 2 star players competing against each other is stolen from Converse, Nike added its signature marionette theme reaching out to every age range unlike Magic and the Hick from French Lick. I can only imagine what is next to come.
The Cruz brothers – Joe and Randy – have done it again! Yes, they have produced yet another trailer in anticipation of the summer season at Orchard Beach in the Bronx.
With the advancements in gadgets and gizmos, Joe and Randy Cruz have been the ones to intelligently market their tournament through their website – Hoopsinthesun.net – as well as other outlets like Facebook, Twitter, and Skype.
Peep this new trailer, not only of legendary moments in HITS history, but the marriage of street basketball and technology!
Roman Perez is street basketball. For those of you who have seen Rodney Park’s (Williamsburg, Brooklyn) own son take the reigns in the summer, you know what the kid can do!
Dubbed “Da Gift,” Perez has played in summer tournaments in almost every borough in New York City, not to mention doing work on the high school and intercollegiate levels. Now, Roman has taken his shot in his native country of the Dominican Republic, where he shines on the hardwood.
IUPUI coach Ron Hunter and 3,000 other basketball coaches are volunteering in a movement to help children in impoverished areas receive shoes. By simply coaching barefooted, they are helping promote Samaritan’s Feet, a charity that donates shoes worldwide to impoverished youths.
One can help by texting the word “SHOES” to 85944 and a $5 donation will provide a pair of new shoes to a child in need. Also, you can donate $1, $3, or $5 at any of the 700 FinishLine Stores until April 1. For more information about Samaritan’s Feet, please view the posted video above or visit www.samaritansfeet.org
