Today I found a pair of shoes I missed dearly. I was about 14 when I got them; they were the first shoes I bought with my first paycheck. They were the Jordan X. Jordan Brand retroed them in 2005 as a recreation of the original Jordan X. I remember actually having the originals when I was in Kindergarten. They are my favorite Jordan of all time, so it was big for me to actually buy my own basketball shoes to ball in. I played in them so much that the stats on the bottom of the shoe disappeared. A friend of mine heard me talk about my Jordan X’s, and showed me a pair of his favorite basketball shoes. He had some Nike Force ¾ highs from 1991. He wore them so much that now the leather is cracking. Age did not help, making the midsole dry and brittle. He got them as a present from one of the hustlers around the way because he could not afford Nikes at the time. To him, he felt like the man lacing them up on the court. The shoe meant more since it was a nice gesture from someone close to him.

I talk about this because I feel every baller who reads Bounce has a story just like me. Tell us about your favorite pair of shoes.

Excuse my callowness, but I figured Stephen Jackson and Al Harrington couldn’t be serious when news emerged that they had collaborated on an independent sneaker line. My exposure to both was limited to Golden State’s fantastic late season run in the 2007 NBA Playoffs. Both Jackson and Al were integral parts to perhaps the biggest cast of misfits and malcontents ever assembled on an NBA court; led by B Diddy at the point, Stack Jack cursed at refs, “Made love to pressure”, launched threes from insensible lengths. Harrington also shot threes—a lot of them. Both ballplayers are deft businessmen, and efforts to build the Protégé brand shouldn’t be taken lightly. They contacted and contracted veteran designer Dallas Stokes (think AND1 Tai Chi and To’Chillin) to handle aesthetic advancement. Both have a sensitive side, too, and their monumental donation with K-Mart to Samaritan’s Feet was more than admirable. Read More »

Budget superstore K-Mart recently partnered up with Protege Footwear to donate 1 million shoes to Samaritan’s Feet. Protege belongs to NBA players Stephen Jackson and Al Harrington, and is the latest in a string of brands that seeks to provide high-performance kicks for those on a budget. (Everything releasing from the brand is $34.95) Last week on TNT’s Inside the NBA, Pro’s Rodney Henry and Samaritan’s Feet Manny Ohonme talk about the charitable effort.
