The AND 1 Tai Chi is back in the building and has been as well-received nine years after its original release as it’s ever been. (40 wrote a glowing review on them a couple weeks back, but I haven’t had any luck finding it – can anyone assist?) Golden State guard Monta Ellis was given these black leather/mustard yellow nubuck joints to wear on the road this year. The speedster’s nickname,” ME8”, is stitched in cursive on the shoe’s rear panel.
What do you think about these compared to the release versions of the Tai Chi?

Released in 1999, the AND1 Crossover Mid is a testament to the brand’s commitment to high-level hoops before the Mixtape Tour took over during the early part of this decade. I’m usually not fond of ’90s sneaker design but love the bulky toebox and how the mesh overlay and textured leather balance each other here. My favorite details, though, are the purple mesh shorts the Player logo is wearing on the midsole that matches Rex Chapman’s jersey number and the “EYES IN BACK OF YOUR HEAD” slogan etched around the heel. Dope, right?

Before the time of high-speed Internet and online shopping, sneakerheads and basketball connoisseurs had to wait monthly for the new Eastbay in order to buy sneakers. I was “The Man” when I brought the new Eastbay to school. People who did not acknowledge my existence suddenly asked to see the catalog with me. A huddle of teenagers would surround me while I was flipping through the pages. People would point at the shoes they wanted to ball in or wear out on the weekend. The people who initially ignored me soon gave me attention because a like interest was discovered. It’s funny because I only got a few catalogs before they cancelled my subscription; one had to be a customer to get it every month. My funds at the time were low so I could not get the catalog sent to my house for long. Other people would give me their catalogs and I would just look at them thinking one day I would get those Eggplant Flightposites. I remember teens cutting out the shoes they wanted from the catalog and taping them inside their locker. One guy I knew adorned the inside of his locker with old Christmas Eastbay catalogs for the holiday season. Those were the days.

Aliso Viejo, California – Basketball brand AND1 has restructured its operating ambitions for the summer, delaying its Mixtape Tour to combine with not-for-profit organization, Project WE. The charitable guild was recently spawned to create opportunities for foster children through music, art, education, and sports.
Financial backing from AND1 has proved critical in giving WE the opportunity to mature rapidly and facilitate events for the nation’s needy children. Jeff Penix, Project WE’s cofounder explains, “AND1’s dynamic support for Project WE has served as an essential lifeline in helping launch the organization during an economic recession. Having such a well established sporting goods company on board gives us strong credibility and really adds to the experience for the children we work with.”
