JR PROS JHS REGULAR SEASON WEEK #2 RECAP… THE RACE TO MADISON SQUARE GARDEN…
The second weekend of the Funsport Junior Pros at JHS 113 in Brooklyn opened with a number of close finishes after another runaway victory by Starrett City, which has become an early favorite to reach the Junior Pros Championship game set for January 3rd at Madison Square Garden.
Gauchos-Harris overcame a 10-point deficit at the start of the 4th quarter and pulled out an exciting 51-48 overtime decision over C-3 Elite. Trailing 36-26 to start the final period, the Gauchos (1-1) rallied and forced the extra session when Tory Ferguson (Fieldstone Secondary, Thiells NY) drove the length of the court for a layup and a 40-40 tie with 9 seconds left in regulation. Jarred Moorer (Mt. Carmel, NYC) led the winners with 12 points, followed by Khalik Howe (IS 131, Bronx) with 11 points, and Ferguson and Kayvon Williams (MS 118, Bronx) with 10 apiece. Williams also grabbed 12 rebounds as he and Ray Pender (Holy Spirit, Bronx) with 13 rebounds, helped shut down the Elite offense during the Gaucho rally. Adam Goldsberry (IS 323, Brooklyn) led all scorers with 23 points (including four treys) for C-3 Elite (1-1).
Shaquille White was the week’s clutch performer as he calmly swished two free throws with 5.8 seconds on the clock, lifting Abyssinian (1-1) to a dramatic 43-42 victory over the Brooklyn Patriots. The Patriots (0-2) had trailed 41-36 with a minute left but then took the lead with a 6-0 spurt before White’s heroics. White (CCS, NYC) finished with a game-high 21 points while Terrell Fullerton (IS 308, Brooklyn) topped the Patriots with 16.
The Playaz Club, making their Junior Pros debut with a Sunday doubleheader, needed a last-second shot to edge Gauchos-Mapp 51-49 and avoid an 0-2 start. Marcus Townes and Nassir Barrino led the Playaz (1-1) with 16 points apiece; Gauchos-Mapp (1-1) was led by Devonte Green with 15 points and Jordan Duncan with 12 rebounds. Green was coming off a 25-point performance in the Gauchos’ earlier 61-25 romp over LI Lightning (0-2). In their first game, the Playaz were beaten 52-43 by the Brooklyn Ballers-A (2-0), who remained unbeaten thanks to Neuby Saint-Hillare (21 points, 15 rebounds) and Tyrone Johnson (20 points, 7 rebounds).
The only match up of unbeaten teams last weekend turned into no contest as Gauchos-Tommie (2-0) downed The City (1-1) 62-30 led by Taquan Givens (16 points), Shawn Jones (14 points) and Isaiah Ice (13 points, 6 assists).
Starrett City (2-0) overwhelmed Wee All-Stars (0-2) 85-13 behind their big three: Isaiah Whitehead (IS 288, Brooklyn), Chancellor Ellis (Allen AME, Queens) and Tim Quashie (Westbury Middle, LI). Ellis had the day’s high of 32 points (with 6 three-pointers) and grabbed 10 boards, Quashie added 22 points, and Whitehead had a near triple-double with 13 points, 14 rebounds and 8 assists.
Two other teams remained undefeated after week 2. Brooklyn Ballers-B outscored Riverside-7 63-49 with Darius James recording 23 points, 14 rebounds and 6 assists. Mark Jones added 17 points and 6 assists for the Ballers (2-0) while Riverside-7 (0-2) was led by Ellis Christmas with 15 points. . . Riverside-8 placed five scorers in double digits en route to a 58-24 romp over New Heights-Blue (0-2). Zach Boscar and Jack Daley led the balanced attack with 13 points apiece, while Giovanni Coureau, Matt Fishman and Daquan Ervin each scored 10 points for Riverside-8 (2-0).
In other week 2 highlights: BK Ballers-Stompers overcame a 23-point, 14-rebound performance by Team Flagrant’s Austin Goodluck (South Orange Middle, NJ) to even their record at 1-1 with a 48-42 victory. Mikequan Campbell (MS 349, Brooklyn) led the Stompers with 13 points and 7 boards. . . Team Flagrant (1-2) later dropped another contest, losing 50-42 to host JHS 113, which received 18 points from Angelo Montgomery and 13 points from James Brooks. . . Trailing 20-9 midway through the third quarter, Elite NYC rallied with a 14-0 run to end the period and went on to down Lightning-McNeil 40-30. Dupree McBrayer (MS 226, Queens) led Elite (1-1) with 12 points while Herv Mildford chipped in with 11 points and 13 boards. . . Lightning-McNeil rebounded with a 37-32 win over F.Y.A., going ahead for good on a pullup jumper by Raven Owens (Trinity Lutheran, SI) with 1:31 left.
