Earv Opong was unbelievable once upon a time. He may have had the fastest handle in NYC and maybe still does. I remember back in like 2005 he used to come and get his workout on at West 4th with us when Future, Speedy, Bodywide and a few other big names used to come down there.
At that time, I was the young cat of West 4th and of course I had to guard the best players. I’ll never forget the day Earv almost made me fall. To this day, a good friend of mine named Steve won’t leave me alone about it.
All I remember was seeing him, and then he was gone and one of my hands was on the floor. Next thing you know it, you hear a loud, “Ohhh.” Earv was so fast you couldn’t even hack him! Of course I had to give him buckets right back and win. I never got so focused in an open rec game in my life until that happened! Worse part about it was I didn’t even know that was him. At that time, I just heard the stories but really did not know what he looked like. I found out that day!

probably the only time i will ever agree with 40 Ounce, haha. Irv had NBA speed, handle and passing abilities. Injuries, playing clown ball with And 1 and injuries derailed his career, but if Dre Barrett (who i like and respect) was in the league Irv could have been too.

Then it must have been the injuries cause I never seen him do any real damage after his fist summer on the scene (when he was at Albany).

Not saying he can’t play, but could have been in the League? Really? His averages at Albany: 35.1 minutes; 6.8 points; 34.6% FG; 30.0% 3-pt FG; 56.7% FT; 3.7 assists; 2.7 turnovers; 2.5 rebounds; 1.7 steals. Not really League numbers. Not even close.

Dre vs Erv’s career is like Nash vs Earl Watson
