Last season, Kobe Bryant dropped 62 on the Knicks in the Garden, and it was all the rave of the league, but who remembers “Pistol” Pete Maravich’s 68 on them back on February 25, 1977 out in New Orleans for the Jazz? We didn’t have ESPN highlights back then, but I remember reading about it in the paper the next day and just buggin’. Check out the clip I just found below. Towards the end Pete goes straight playground with a woopty-woop lay-up and then a signature no-look. Pure joy:

Is Pistol your all time favorite Bob? He keeps climbing higher and higher on my list of all time greats. On another note, its bugged to look at that style of defense compared to today’s standards.

word bob. i embedded this in “the semi-automatic, pistol pete” joint that i posted recently. and clyde is one of the greatest defenders ever. just goes to show how incredible maravich was. his college exploits are really beyond explanation.

Bob this is a hell of a post! I can watch pistol Pete footage all day, the guy had a handle with one hand, someone please explain to me how do you cross someone with one hand! Jeez, I think if he was in the league today he would be averaging the same assist numbers that Steve Nash was averaging before the suns broke up.

Pistol was ahead of his time… What’s crazy about his college exploits is that he did it with no three pointer!!!! Imagine what his average would have been if that was in the college game at the time… His handle was incredible

black players in the league at that time had disdain for pete since he got a big deal early on. pete was very ill. cats like lou hudson. i see no one has spoke on bryants 62. i thought the 55 jordan put up was better but bryant was definitely reppin that night. i know ali would rather have lebron but i would take bryant any day over james.
40 cal…pistol would probably shoot more these days so he wouldnt average that many assist. pete was a gunner.

A statistical analysis later charted all of Maravich’s college shots. It was definitively concluded that he would have averaged 13 three’s per game, which would have notched his college career average up to 57 points per game.
YO! THAT’S CRAZY!
