Bob reports in his issue #21 “Let ‘Em Marinate” column that Under Armour has plans to delay the release of their b-ball lineup until 2011. Even with the lag, the Baltimore, Maryland outfit will equip several Division 1 and AAU squads with special make-ups of the BB Protoype this winter and next summer. I’m particularly smitten with the shoe’s aesthetics and material combinations, so all of the pairs pictured above look lovely.
What’s your favorite scheme in the bunch?

Swoosh only? What are you wearing these days, sir? I’ve been rarely moved by Nike these past couple of years. . .

Nike has ruined the shoe game. As great as Nike is, is as bad as Nike is. Shoes use to be about trying something new and then finding the brand that best represented you. In the 80’s, Brooks and Etonics found their way onto the feet of professional ballers and with variety came flavor. Now Nike has so much money and resources that they have effectively wiped out any potential competition in the hoops shoe game. For any person that is a Nike only person, imagine having a dream to start a computer company only to realize that you can’t really put your foot in the door because Microsoft and Apple have a monopoly. Very frustrating for a person who dreams big, but you have to keep it moving. I wouldn’t count out UA. They are a very strategic company and they have found a niche and are doing well. To launch a hoops shoe is a complicated matter. I would have to think adding someone from k1x would not have helped or sped up the process. I was at Footlocker Outlet this weekend and the lazylayups and other styles were on sale for 9.99 and 19.99. It doesn’t sound like k1x has made much of a dent in the US either. This is not hating on Nike, it is just very hard when the mentality is no longer to find something and be different. The mentality is to fall in line and love Nike or be laughed at. Nike has everything at their disposal to always create more performance and style. But the problem is what happens when there is only Nike? Have you been in a foot store lately? The stores barely even promote other brands. It is never good for a company to completely control a market.
BTW J. Rip, my favorite colorway is the KBL version. If I had the money to make the shoe I wanted, I’d seriously throw caution to the wind and get the shoe done. Sink or swim. I’m still working on getting that dough to really do this thing right though. I am working on a revision of the lifestyle shoe using some high end materials on the upper. I’ll keep you posted.

Who’s this Cesar fella? A middleman for various tournaments around NYC? I saw him mentioned in 40 Cal’s summer rundown and am clueless as to who he is.
CCB –
I don’t have sales numbers to substantiate my claims, but Kay One has upped its brand presence these past two summers. Not sure how it’s translated into the conglomerate controlled retail world, but our pals from Germany are connected with some fly tourneys in NYC. They’ve broadened their apparel game, too. . . No one in Wisconsin is up on them, though.
I’ll have to catch up with you on the e-mail soon!

@ Cheesecake – Cesar – (C-Viz as he calls himself, lol) was the Brand Manager for the K1X brand here in the U.S.A. It seems 40 Cal and even K1X themselves have tried to downplay his involvement in the brand since they decided to part ways, but the truth is that he got them Homicide and all the other NYC players that they were pushing, High Rizer, Joel Ortiz, Saigon, MTV love with with JoJo on Run’s House (probably not a good look on the rap side, but good nationwide exposure) and he was the one that got them into Foot Locker AND Champ’s. He did everything but sell the shoes at the store level!! Nobody knows the Germans here in the U.S., he was the face of the brand. He was far from a middle man, he was THE man. I heard he paid out of pocket for the only real diamond K1X chain and the ball players were wearing cubics, haha. He has mad respect in the shoe business game and I’m sure he will pop up somewhere else if he isn’t already somewhere getting ready for next spring/summer. Everyone who knows him knows that he lived and trained with T-Mac for over a year in Orlando, 40 cal is way out of his league with Ceez on and off the court, haha.

Thanks for unscrambling it all for me, yella. Appreciate that. If he’s as talented as you say he is, he won’t have a problem finding a position with a brand.
Bob – The white/green low tops I think you’re referring to are USF Bulls exclusives. Not sure on the white/red pair, but I’m guessing you’ll be seeing them on ACC courts this winter.
illest – That’s a dope list, particularly the beef-’n-brocs. Bob came correct with those. Can’t cosign the Black Cats, though. Hate all-black kicks!
