About a month ago, Bobbito, Casey Lee and I sat down for lunch at a Jamaican spot up by Bob’s crib in Harlem. The food was pretty good. The dialogue was even better.
Among the several topics we touched on was the most overrated player in the city. I know Bounce is in large part about spreading love, which I’m all for, but this query just seemed too intriguing to be left to three reporters sitting at a table on a hot Thursday afternoon.
I won’t list any of the names we came up with; however, I would like to pose the question because I think it could encourage serious debate: Who is the most overrated playground/tournament player in New York City?

Bobbito Garcia a.k.a. Kool Bob Love says:
i’ll begin with myself! people think just because i’ve been in video games adn on tv that they can call me a ‘legend’ as a player, but that is not the case at all. i’ll take ‘legendary personality’ no problem. i’m a veteran, but i never averaged 30+ anywhere that it counted.
that word gets used too loosely and i always deflect people calling me such cuz then it diminishes what it means and who it should be really used for, guys like hammond, dugger, pookie wilson, term, master rob, homicide, speedy etc guys who killed every where they went no matter what, and did it for years.
i think it’s fine to be called specifically a west 4th legend or dyckman legend, whatever, but when you say ‘playground legend’ that should mean it didnt’ matter the park. there are some guys who are great in front of their home crowd and announcer, get the calls, but then can’t duplicate the rep elsewhere.
i also don’t think you can be called a ‘legend’ if you just did it for two years and then fell off. that’s called ‘a legendary season’ but that doesn’t make one a legend.
same thing with moves. i’ve pulled off some nice highlight passes and dribbles in games, but unless i was doing it to a top flight defender on the level of a speedy (who has always given me fits when he guards me), etc., it doesn’t become legendary.
which all brings me back to trevor’s question . . .
there are some guys who are called legends, are may be on track to be, but who can we really say are the ones out there right now? otherwise, they are overrated too!

my_potna_dem says:
world premier (5 foot nothing)
2 hard 2 guard (easy to gurd, let him shoot)
Mile/s High (no post game whatsoever)
btw, none of these guys are “LEGENDS”, they just have names at the moment. that term is thrown around too loosely. to be a legend you gotta have longevity. some currently active legends are
big strick (45 years old!! haha, that’ amazing)
reem reid
mike campbell
a-butta (even though he’s a bitch ass n***a he’s been puttin in his work)
homicide (even though he takes off every other summer)

Jon says:
Bob, I agree with you! You are one of, if not THE, most overrated players in NYC! Ha ha!
This is a good question. I don’t Think World Premiere is overrated at all. I think defense is underrated and that’s why he doesn’t get the credit he deserves. WP can lead a team. His decision-making ability, ball-control, play-making and, of course, his defense are all at a high level. In a world where defense is paramount and crossovers are only effective when they lead to a made basket, WP is a top caliber player.
I wasn’t sure that 2 Hard 2 Guard truly earned player of the year honors, but then again did anybody really stand out this year? I saw Kemba put in work. T2 was on his game.
It’s difficult to answer without looking at the whole picture. I’m a fan of Mike Glover’s game, for example. He can score, defend and he plays hard whenever he laces ‘em up. This year he ran with Bingo’s All-Stars where he didn’t need to be a go-to guy. Does that make him overrated because he does what it takes to win and not necessarily chase awards for individual accomplishments? He’s a guy who can dominate throughout the city, but doesn’t need to to get W’s. If you only looked at points and heard the good things people say about Mike “The Punisher” Glover, you might say he’s overrated. I’d say that’s a limited scope.
I’m interested to see what other people have to say about this. Good question!

Mike glover is in the early stages of brewing into something special. He does the hard things well. All it will take is some hard work and the right coaching on a professional level. I’m also a fan of his game & he deserves to be playing Big East ball. Would have made the Big East Conference if not already talk of the town. Kemba has improved since last year along with Adris. He’s young and has a long ways to go. Somtimes the street doesn’t allow you to flourish where it really counts. It’s funny how you could be the best on the street and it not count for anything. Yet for being the best on the highest level of competition namely the N.B.A. your automatically(Politically) better. I’ve heard a lot of pros compliment or inquire about some players mentioned above or in some other articles while battling against them. It doesn’t matter where the game is played it’s still the same. The Best players don’t make it year in and year out. Just how it goes. SAD. I wish all of our younger generation get the chance & oppurtunity to play out their dream and lead our future of up & comers to be better than us & those prior. The politics of the league are probably why T2 would prefer to play overseas. It doesn’t make sense. Why would you want less money and no minutes in comparison. You should have the best. Of all the overseas players how many are actually better than those in the states & they’ve been playing pro for how long. It shouldn’t matter where your from or What school or conference your in. Analysts,Scouts,GM’s Coaches and media alike are human and wrong a lot of the times. A lot of stars have been derailed and given up on the business aspect of the game. It’s not interesting to have a league where it’s only possible that 4 of the N.B.A. teams could compete for a Championship. You could name on hand how many people you’d actually pay to see. The system needs a revamp and we need the youth infusion & balance between love & business. Why do you think the game has gotten worse. Some of us that played were better and knew but only to fall victim to the P word. Our younger peers took noticed and changed their course of dedication. It’s changed the landscape of the game. It’s why parks are empty and more people revert or chase other things. Which isn’t a bad thing but then again Life isn’t fair & that’s something that isn’t stressed enough in school.

jonathan lopez, puh-leeazzze don’t let me start!
you are the most overrated pure shooter in the LES. your form is perfect so people expect you to connect, but you only shot like .009% from the field this summer in watson and ham-fish! haha. you’ve been spending too much time learning photoshop instead of getting out there and practicing! and you still wear them beat-up new balances from three years ago that were maybe okay back then, but just look terrible now. so you overrated on style points, too! oh, and that “dunk” at ham-fish was the worst tap i ever seen in my life! you tipped the ball in and then grabbed the rim like three seconds later. i seen 10 year olds slap boards at baby rucker that looked more exciting than your “tap-dunk.” they were calling you ‘j-lo’ at ham-fish, but after that you became jonathan aka “stay low” (even your nickname is an ayo)
haha! my man

Next topic who is the least hyped player/machine and why? You guys should get a show/summerball. Would definitely support. Summerball is like fine wine. I love this game. LOL. My opinion of most overhyped would be Sebastian Telfair. I like his game and he’s cool and all. I just don’t see how people thought or think he’s the best guard in NYC. He still isn’t the best out of New York. We’re judged and labeled by one person. He’s a back-up and that’s okay but the hype destroyed his confidence which was his game. Here’s a player that was given & Oppurtunity(Some What) What are some of you guys opinion of Bassy. It’s funny though I think if Bassy got a chance to Start for the Knicks I think he could resurrect his career. I’d even like to see him in Atlanta running with the Hawks. He’s a talent don’t get me wrong. Just not the best or shouldn’t have been lottery coming out of High School. My Opinion. He also played very well for Wolves last yr. He kept them in a lot of games and matured out of the limelight. Bassy could run a team better than Farmar,Ridnour,Duhon,T.Lue,and a few others. It’s all about right team/right system. He’d also bode well in Philly. They’d love his moxy. I think he could cause havoc like Tony Parker it’s just his hype best guard in NYC was something I’m not sure of who could have lived up to those lofty expectations. You’re talking about some Great Guards here. How funny would it be if Skip joined the Lakers and they went on to be one of the best Dynasty’s in Basketball. It could happen. Would Skip be considered H.O.F if he lead them at the one. I would do whatever it took. Another person that gives us a bad name is Lance attitude. His game and talent is arguably or I’ll say the best in the country hands down. He could totally dominate the league right now. My opinion. He might go for 50 in a game next yr. If he wins the Big East tournament from Cincy. #1 pick here we go. I’m rooting for you boi. I’m a Queens head. He’s ill though with the build for it. Dumb rule. LOL.

The Dark Flight!(dont get dunked on!) says:
Steve Burtt Jr, hands down he’s one of the best shooters in the city but you cant win games playing one on one basketball, anyone can drop 50 with a little determanation and hard work but you gotta give more, defense goes a long way and steve never plays defense
2 hard 2 gaurd, Adris is an Iverson, He’s a 2 trapped in point gaurds body, he hardly passes the rock and you gotta question him getting player of the year, when you look for a player of the year it gotta be about more than playing with the rock between your legs and wetting jumpers, what happend to the All Around player who grabs boards, shoots well, picks off about 2 or three steals and can distribute the ball.
Homicide, the guy gets to much Juice for things people been doing before him! Look at how Malloy (future) played this year, he did whatever it took to win, maybe they didint give him player of the year due to him playing for K1X kingdome.
Ant Glover, I dont understand why someone would start him at the Pro City Champioship.
Charles Jones, whens the last time this guy hit a jumper.

I agree – the term “Legend” gets thrown around loosely.
I like how back in the day, guys killed it at the park for years and now they finally get their recognition as a legend. It takes YEARS, CHAMPIONSHIPS, and many FANS TO VOUCH that he or she was the one.

Most Overated streetballer for years has been Cory Undertaker Underwood. No right hand and the same moves/lack of work ethic over and over again. The new and upcoming guy that might be real overated is Mousey The Magician.Yes he has handle and woos the crowd but he never does anything in big games. Not to mention he becomes a 4th option at times with his Dipset squad allowing Miles High,Hines, and Butta to shoulder the load in big games. He looks totally different…almost afraid. He wanted no part of Kemba Walker one night at Dyckman. Most elite streetballers would get up and savor that matchup and try to make a statement.Mousey also tries taking everyone on a clearout and it doesn’t work.He also plays no defense and the only reason why he puts up big numbers is because he always has the ball in his hands. He doesn’t know how to really score in the flow of the game.As for Charles Jones the man is a facilitator and does what he wants hes that good.I seen him bang back to back 30 footers at pro city this year in the 2nd to last playoff game like nothing.Gotta agree with Ant Glover opinion though.Boring player and all he does is slow down the game by getting to the line.Good for him and his team but not good to watch.Kareem Reid,Junie Sanders, and The Franchise are the three best legends on the streets.

If u want to talk on the pro/nba/overseas level Smush Parker comes 1st to mind. The guy believes his own hype after it took him years to maintain a steady position in the league and he managed to mess that up.The guy is a clown.Hes lucky 6′4 with somewhat of a jumpshot and athletic ability or else he would have never even made it consitently as a guard. For him to disrespect Kobe is just appauling.Interesting comments bout my man Bassy from CI.He was never overated. He was the real deal in High school and a top6-8 prospect coming out. However is inability to attend college and take the money was big mistake for him playing wise. Not a mistake financially so you win some and you lose some.He is still one of the fastest pointguards in the league and he ever redevelops some hard work and belief in himself he could be a starter for a team that likes to push like the Knicks or Sixers. His natural ability is tremendous but sometimes he looks totally lost and with no confidence in what he does on the floor.Remember hes still a kid 24 years old.

It’s not Telfair’s fault that he received crazy hype in high school and was drafted so high. I find it difficult to consider somebody who’s made it to the league at his size as “overrated”. Not only is he in the league, but he’s usually in the rotation, if not starting. If he had received limited exposure in high school and then made the league as an undrafted rookie who never went to college, he’d be looked at as an NYC folk hero and the word “overrated” would never enter the picture.

It’s like dam, Where do you start. Miles high can dunk and that’s about it but when people start talking about he’s a pro it’s like who the hell are you watching. Total Package is 28 years old and he’s finished yet they hype him up as soon as he walks in the park. The Magician is straight trash. Jessie Sapp is suspect. Sticks has never impressed me i wish i knew what was the big deal about him. And why are yall bringing up Sebastian Telfair one streetball tournament game year does not qualify you for anything. Steve Burtt Jr. is a cry baby so he only wants to play on teams where he’s surrounded by bums. I’m pretty sure i’m missing a few more.
September 9th, 2009 at 3:23 pm
Azucar says:
I have to go with Sticks. He’s never impressed me. All he has is a weak post-up game and a knack to turn the ball over.
Can’t say that Smush is overrated. He’s basically cruising out there and still killin it. If he went hard like alot of players do, he would probably be unstoppable…on the streets that is.
Did someone seriously throw Skip’s name in this? They can’t be serious.

One of the most underrated players may be the kid the Problem from team 914. He does everything!
I think it is tough to say some of these other guys like 2 Hard Too Guard, Mouse the Magician, Mike Glover, Jessie Sapp are all over hyped. Granted they are all under the age of 23 and either just completed college or are just starting. There’s a new crop on deck, C Fish, Kemba, Jiggy Josh, World Premiere!
back in the days there was an elite group of guys who started playing in the street and excelled (Steph, Sham, Reem, Kerry Goat, Ed Smith, Ron Ron, Skip just to name a few). The new generation are killing amongst older guys.
I commend Junie, Strick, CJ, DP, Mike Campbell for still bringing it every game. But the weakest cats are in the middle of the pack the Corey Underwoods, Stix, etc.
Bashy is a pro and no one can ever take that from him. Smush made it to the pro’s he has a couple of years in can’t take that away from him. Be proud of the guys who come out of the city and make it cause honestly we talk about how good basketball is but we don’t produce pro’s we produce streetball legends which don’t amount to nothing. That short paper being distributed is nothing.
Let’s embrace instead of hate, Clowns!

As for Smush I am a hater because he has an attitude problem. Why dont you youtube what he said about his experience with Kobe and the Lakers. The guy is a clown.Hes lucky to have been in the league after floating around for years and going undrafted. Most players like him that have gone through similar jorneys embrace the situation not think thyre above it.As for in the streets hes probably top 5 but his game is overated.I seen him get shut down by Kemba last year at Tri-State to the tune of 4 points.Hard to say people like Best Kept is overated. His game aint flashy just real consistent and a true pointguard.Nate Robinson outclasses 80 percent of the league so what was the point of that statement.Reem Reid does not have the strength or physical ability to match up with Nate so that makes him overated??Come on…Thats like saying Chris Bosh isn’t good because he cannot guard Shaq in the post.Skip is solid in the league and nobody ever thought he was great except for Ron Naclerio so hes not overated to me either.Lance not sure about yet.I also think the problem is real good perhaps underated he just get lost in the shuffle at times with all that firepower Team 914 has.

is world premier a younger cat?? i still think he is garbage but if he is under 25 that gives him time to get more polished. c-wood and sticks have pro games that translate better on the hardwood than the concrete. neither one of them are BUMS. Even though ppl hate on Homicide because of his mouth he is still the only streetballer to get real $$ with an outdoor game. he didn’t make the league but he had a signature shoe and im sure he makes six figures in Australia. these other cats is home right now.

Being a great talent or winning coach doesn’t make you a good person. Neither does it make you any easier to get along. Jordan wasn’t always right. President and so on. Parents aren’t always right. If I recall Kobe gave up on a team and told on a teammate. What’s worse you tell me. Dont just give the guy a pass because of the ring. If smush had the team they had know. They’d be even better. Shannon Brown is not that good. Farmar is terrible. Vujaic is horrible. Walton is lucky. Kobe again grew up a year to late. It’s hard playing for a guy that won’t budge or change with the times. All Smush was saying is he never played with a player that coaches, makes the subs, is the offensive and defensive coordinator. Is above the whole team and league doesn’t make mistakes and is and maybe still not the greatest teammate. He’s partly responsible for breaking up arguably one of the best dynasties. He’s selfish as we’ve all seen. He isn’t cool or someone you relate. I respect his game and work ethic. That’s about it.
Even Jordan was crazy for not having ISIAH THOMAS On the Dream Team. Don’t be mad he kept you away from some rings. People in power forget how the like of those before paved the way. Also they were schooled by people who were great on & off the court. The only reason Kobe and Lamar don’t clash is because Odom is so passive and a great teammate mentally. Not playing wise. Could Smush be tired of all the politics he endured along the way. B.Hill blackballing. Him deserving minutes and not getting them. To him finally getting to be a part of something special and not being able to perform as a team. It’s Kobe just stand there and pass him the ball every time. Even if I hit my last 5 shots. Pass Kobe the ball. Humans don’t make mistakes by Kobe. There’s only great. Again how long did it finally take Kobe to get. He’s still not all the way there. He has an earring now and Tattoo. LOL. Does he have rims on his cars. LOL.

If a team like the Knicks or the Hawks gave him a chance. Even the Blazers alot of you people would choke your words. He started for the Lakers in the West from Fordham. He almost got drafted from Fordham. He played public school. He may be a little high maintenance. But again who isn’t. He’s an undeniable talent. He’s only problem is he never was a PG. His IQ is is higher than half the N.B.A. He’s gotten the raw end of the stick. Oh well he’ll just be considered one of the great overseas stars. Fresh of winning a chip. I hope he one days plays against our national team and goes for 40. I think he deserves another chance in the league. What has he done that’s been so bad. Let him grow with a Players Coach. There aren’t many of those. My way or the highway guys are never wrong. The Mike K is still considered the best college and always will be even though he hasn’t won since. I love you coach K just making a refrence. If Phil told a team to sign they will. Imagine someone blacklisting phil. Mike may have remained ringless like Lebron. All my opinion. Don’t kill me guys. LOL. Is Smush at least better than Chris Duhon. I know he’s better than Tyronn Lue. You know why Smush career was so hard. The choice and conference of his school. It’s why a lot of talented players get overlooked & the bums who are lucky get in. They in turn hurt the game and hopefully better their communities which are usually in GREAT SHAPE. Why is it the worse your living conditions the better player you are? 2.Why is Basketball our sport of choice. 3. Why when we play any sport we’re able to dominate. 4.Things to make you Arsenio Hall.

nobody said he wasn’t good.He just is overated. If he was in the league now he would not be one of the best 150-175 players in the league clearly. When he walks into Pro City with his shades and his expensive bookbag showing off is the reason why he gets killed. His prima-donna attitude thinking he is better than what he is.If he was that good he would of stuck and not been out basically blackballed outta the league.Lets not forget he assaulted a Miami Heat praking attendant which led to his trade to the Clips which was his last stop before he was outta the NBA.Guy got lucky to be in the right place at the right time with L.A. and Phil gave him a shot.Lets also remember his altercation with Phil before game 1 of the series against Phoenix his last year with L.A.where he basically got benched for rookie Jordan Farmar. The guy is overated as a player. He is better than Chris Duhon or Tyronn Lue but would he be able to get that opportunity with the Knicks like Duhon has.Its all about opportunities and being in the right situation. Then there are clear cut guys that could do it in any situation and those are the guys that are good.People talk about Smush like he is an NBA level consistent starting guard at some capacity and he just is not.He kills it on the streets but is not all that.Like I said 6′4 athletic with ballhandling and some shooting ability. As a guard thats a prototype dream that hes been blessed with and the only advantage he has…
September 10th, 2009 at 9:38 pm

Yall gonna hate for this statement I’m about to make. I think Duhon would do quite well in the streets. He’s a legit 6″1, can shoot and has hops as far as gaurds on the street level goes. Tyron. Lue as well. These guys excelled in High School & College. They have nothing to prove in the streets because thay have pro contracts. Smush was there. He had his best seasons next to. Kobe (check his career stats). All the guys I’m hearing are bums are being judged vs NBA stars. If. K.satt never played streetball, we would call him a bum too based on his nba stats. I could see if were talking 7 foot stiffs that make the league but most point Gaurds in the league wouldn’t have a problem at all in the streets except we may not appriecite them cause they don’t showboat.

I don’t think that Mouse is overrated, they only talk about him in certain Harlem tournaments and he’s not listed in the top 5 in none of them, so how could he be overrated if he’s not on your’s or my top 10 list of guards. Fair and good points from all you guys.Donni is underated. He was all big east 2nd team his senior year with Providence. He also averaged close to 16 a game in the toughest conference in the nation but unfortunately went undrafted.Look forward to seeing more of Donnie McGrath next summer.Believe me Reed Harlem Mouse is talked about all over because of that Harlem Rep and many feel he is a top guard and has the best handle in the streets.I still gotta go with either Underwood/Stixx as most overrated.Guys do nothing in big spots against real comp. Both have weak/same moves.
