Mike Campbell and his Money Inc. opponents were jawing at each other all game.
X-Men point guard Steve Chase is hardly a household name. On a team that features perennial superstars Mike “King of New York” Campbell and Tommie “Gunz” Eddie, Chase is more a solid veteran who won’t make many mistakes than a magnet to camera flashes.
But Friday night, Chase delivered one of the biggest shots of his life—a buzzer beater at West 4th Street to give the defending champion X-Men an 82-80 win over Money Inc.
With about 10 seconds left and the scored tied at 80, Campbell isolated himself on the right side, drew a double team and passed the ball across court to the wide-open Chase. Chase took two dribbles and put up a contested tear-drop from the left side that fell through the as the buzzer sounded.
Chris Whey and Malcolm Connor combined for 35 points for the X-Men and Campbell added 16.
Former X-Men forward Raphael “Black Rain” Edwards netted 13 for Money Inc.
West 4th Street is off July 4, but is set to continue Sunday at 3 p.m.
