Kurious Jorge “Brand New Day” video featuring Dave Dar and Co Campbell, 2009

Who out there remembers my man Kurious Jorge?
In ‘93, he released his debut LP A Constipated Monkey on Hoppoh/Columbia Records. I was an Executive Producer on it, but have known Jorge his whole life as we both lived on 97th St. growing up. Little known fact, but he played ball at Trinity School and with the Central Baptist Kings in the City-Wide AA summer league. No handle, couldn’t defend, but had a decent mid-range jumper with good form. He also had kicks! When I first came home after graduating from college in ‘88, homeboy was on the block in the only light blue nubuck Nike AF1 lows he copped at Jew Man’s up in the Bronx where the people were fresh. Nobody had his Carolinas in our ‘hood! Exclusive! He even lent them to me once to wear for a dance performance I had at a downtown club.
Another little known fact: Kurious was my first co-host on the WKCR 89.9FM DJ Stretch Armstrong Show starting in ‘90, years before Lord Sear would become infamous for baking cats on the mic opposite me on the boards. Once his rhyming career starting taking off, Jorge left the show, but he was an integral part in establishing a high standard for off the top of the head rhyme performances for us.
Jorge’s album with Amalgam Records is out now. To find out more, hit him up here.
For a refresher, peep his first single “Walk a Duck,” shot at the legendary “Goat Park” b-ball court:

And peep this unofficial B sides Mix full of radio appearances and a whole lot of Bobbito here and there….I’m not sure IF? this is the mix that released when “A Constipated Monkey” was released by Amalgam, but I been rockin’ it pretty tough since I scored it last week:

Ehyo Bob, how did that work with you being management/executive producer of said record with the re-issue, did those that re-introduced said project back to the world in preperation of this new release get permission from you to do so or what have you? I mean, aside from the addition to 2 b side joints from back when, all that was missing on the re-issue was Ruffhouse/Columbia and the original executive producers….I still cherish my original copy and all the 12″s that dropped for said record. It’s good to keep stuff.
peace.

Constipated Monkey -named because it took so long for his $hit to drop….
Walk like a duck ran regularly on Rap City (BET). As you can see I remember.

Alright! Good to see Kurious making a comeback. My favorite song off of the Constipated Monkey LP was the ‘I’m Kurious’ joint.
My favorite jawn from your boy though is ‘A Mansion and a Yacht’ that he did with Sadat X and Mike G. It’s interesting because I’m not a huge fan of Sadat’s voice. ( I heard he could could ball though–can anyone confirm this?!)

sadat x could absolutely play, bran nubian DJ alimoe was “good to go” as puba said, too. x played d1 for a hot sec then finished at d3 hunter college, was coaching riverside church a couple of years recently. he’s a lefty, we got to rock two or three times and he played smart.

i didn’t own any of the masters of publishing as an executive producer, so i had nothing to do with the amalgam re-issue except give it my absolute blessings. i’ve known jorge his whole life as we grew up in the same building and i’m older than him. i gave him his start in teh industry, taught him about off the top of the head freestyling, introduced him to the downtown hip hop club scene, all that. love him like my little brother. fams to the fullest, b. word up.

How could I forget Kurious? Heads used to say I looked like him and started calling me Kurious around my way back in the early 90’s. I look nothing like him, but before that cats were calling me Everlast, so I didn’t mind the change up, so I let that slide. Hahaa
I’m digging this like Ali said,”on some grown man, responsible, smoothness”. But I do hope there are some bangers on his new album. I didn’t realize it dropped already. Thanks, I’m gonna go cop that.
