In its first year, Five-Star Basketball NY has worked with well over 100 student athletes in various workout, instruction and training settings.
One result of all of this was becoming connected to a league of public middle schools within Manhattan, which opened my eyes to many things. Many of these kids while talented are not exposed to the resources necessary, which are vital in their advancement as student athletes. Since January, we have been opening our gym downtown to these athletes at no cost where they have begun to receive much of the guidance and instruction that they both need and deserve.
As we predicted the kids became hungry for competition which is why we created the “Manhattan Power” which is our first team stemming from Five-Star Basketball New York. In case you were wondering we decided on “Power” for a few reasons, specifically to constantly send the message that we all the have “The Power to do More” which is a running theme of our team and to honor the memory and success of Power Memorial High School Basketball.
This Spring our 15 and under team has begun playing games and tournaments in the tri-state area. Last week we held a modest fund raising event that began raising money to keep this team and program moving forward. The event drew many friends, parents, and some who were just interested in lending support and learning about the program.
It was a success and we are already planning the next event for late this summer.

very nice paying homage to power memorial. as a kid, i’d go to watch mario elie, darryl walker, craig ware, gus santos, and all the other great players they had there in ‘81 shortly before they closed. man, even there varsity b squad was nice if i remember correctly! plus they had the slick converse pro model Dr. Js in white/purple which you couldn’t find no where in stores except the “bullet-proof window” spot up on 149th near third ave.
great memories, thanks!
