If your wondering that’s a Dutch Shoe at the top of the Conference Championship trophy
City Basketball on the Division III level is sometimes overlooked by the mainstream fan, but it shouldn’t in New York City. With so many players here, the CUNY Athletic Conference offers some solid basketball at the best price of all – free. I will be announcing the Community College Finals tomorrow at Hostos Community College in the Bronx on BronxNet channel 67 and CUNY TV channel 75 on tape delay – (March 1, 2009 at 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM). Then, I will slide over to radio/internet to broadcast the Senior College Finals next Friday at CCNY in Harlem. Several players from the conference play summer ball: Brooklyn College’s Richard Jean-Baptiste – St. John’s Prep, who is big-tournament-shirt-nice and has a future as a summer ball standout/overseas pro, PSAL 2005 championship point guard Emiljano Kinaj – John F. Kennedy, PSAL 2004 finalist – Nick Flagg – Cardozo, to go along with Lehman’s Duane “All-Purpose” Rhoden – DeWitt Clinton, and City Tech’s Jamaal Hall – Benjamin Bannaker.

Sean you should be commended for being such a big supporter of CUNY bball. I have seen you on air at a host of games over the years. Also wanted acknowledge Jamaal’s teammate at City Tech Roman “Da Gift” Perez who is plays in numerous summer ball tournament’s as well. Keep up the great work!

no doubt jamal hall got a nice lefty game, even though him and teammate roman perez couldn’t take me out in a shooting contest during pre-season–in their home gym! i’ll give them both a chance to redeem themselves in teh spring at ‘anytime, anyday!’ hahah
sean, what was your nickname against mike boogie and tip dog? i’m dying to know!

Bob, I gotta say it…
back in 1985, they said I was skipping on em and someone in the crowd said he’s “Skip to my Lou-ing on people,” at 139th Street and Lenox. Ask Tip and Mike about it!

Dang Sean…so you were the original Skip, huh? haaaa…some former and current NBA players/coaches came out of D3 schools and have proved themselves as keepers..

I do agree that Richard from Brooklyn college is great but as far as a stand out at summer ball tournament in the city, I see him as an average player.
Another player to watch out for is Iouri. Plays for a community college so he has a chance to play at a D2 or low D1. All his team mates in High School played D1 upset for Telfair which is in the league.

Saw Iouri tonight in the cuny community college championships. Nice range and very solid defensively. A high 2 would get a very good player who could score in and out and go for high double figures (18 or better). While a low 1 would have a kid that could come off the bench and contribute as a catch and shoot player with solid defense.

I can’t hardly wait for the tourney to start I seen duane rhoden play against my school Im not gonna lie he killed us earlier this season I currently attend John Jay college im a big fan of D1 but I gotta show luv for my school we took the chip last year one player that it think u should look out for is Vaughn Mason thats if he recovered from his injury. he’s arguably one of the best players in the conference and I hope we can get past brooklyn college in the first round and hopefully make a deep run in the tourney which is a monumental task despite how the season was

Sean Couch says:
John Jay has great coaching. Vaughn Mason is a very athletic 3 that has been a bit foul prone but can shoot the three and get over the rim. He is a bit streaky but when he puts it together, watch out. John Jay is always dangerous because they play “D.”
