My man Turk a.k.a. Trike sent me an email this week with this photo from the Daily News that ran an article on West 4th St. back in July 20, 1981. Here is his memory of it:
…#4 is me taking it to the hole and that’s Lionel Hollins [former Sixer and Blazer NBA guard] to my left with the beard. He played two games with us that year. To the far right you can barely see a young Kenny Graham [West 4th Tournament founder/director] who used to ref his own games… this photo was the highlight of my summer.

Picture brings back memories..I use to watch all the games down there during that period.I believe that was the year Motley’s crew ran havoc over everyone-Clark Eli,
Leroy Shaw,Mike Pyatt,Eford and a host of others.Wes Ramseur and Joe Hammond were the best I saw down there.

Other notable tournaments at that time were Breevort, BRC, Cromwell, Soul in the Hole, Kingston, Rockville Center, City College, Nike ProAm, Riis Beach, etc..
To everyone..keep balling and have fun because one day it all ends.

Ken,your cousin Wes Ramseur was a pleasure to watch play basketball especially in the Cage. Even after 30 some odd years I can still remember vividly Wes going straight up in the air and shooting that jumper of his.It was a sad day at the park years ago when everyone learned of his untimely death.
ENEW,Leroy Shaw was like a whirling dervish with the basketball in his hands at the Cage. I first saw him play at McBurney Y right after he signed with the Knicks during the summer of (77?). Man, him and Clark Eli used to wreak havoc on folks.Back in the day………….
