Next time you find yourself at one of DJ AM’s shows or just happen to catch him on the streets, take a moment to peep down to his feet. Chances are, the world famous DJ is rocking some ultra-exclusive kicks.
The Philly native’s collection is serious. A few years back, MTV came around to his L.A. spot, where AM had stacks of shoe boxes overflowing out of every closet. His reputation as a sneakerhead is so respected, Nike even customized a pair of AF1s in his honor.
Over the weekend, AM took time out of his busy schedule to do a little Q&A with Bounce via Email.
Bounce: It’s no secret you are a big sneaker junkie. On MTV two years ago, you said your collection was sitting at 600 pairs. What is it looking like now?
DJ AM: 1,000 but I am ready to have an auction for 1/2 of them for charity.
Bounce: Where do you think your collection ranks against sneakerheads around the globe? Is it at least the best celebrity collection out?
DJ AM: No idea.. I just know it makes me happy!
Bounce: In the MTV piece, you had sneakers everywhere in the house. Have you found a better way of organizing the collection since?
DJ AM: Not so much hahahaha. Well, I moved and there was a shallow linen closet. That now it’s a lit up sneaker display.
Bounce: How did you get involved with collecting sneakers in the first place?
DJ AM: Walked into a shoe store, bought a pair, repeated many times
Bounce: Where do you usually get your shoes? You got some favorite stores or do you go online?
DJ AM: UNDFTD is my home away from home. You can’t front on them. They are the OG. But if you don’t live in LA. You also can’t front on eBay. Sad but true.
Bounce: In the show Entourage you lined up for a pair. Have you done that in real life?
DJ AM: I actually didn’t line up, But I did race across town MANY times to get
a pair before they were gone.
Bounce: Is there anything you are currently looking for? Is there one shoe out there you want to get your hand on?
DJ AM: Too many to list.
Bounce: What’s the most amount of money you’ve thrown down on a pair?
DJ AM: Rather not say. I may be locked up.
Bounce: Tell me how your customized Nike DJ AM’s came about?
DJ AM: G0D loves me!
Bounce: Give me your top five shoes of all time and the reasons why.
DJ AM:
1-Air Max 95
2-Jordan 1
3-Nike Dunk High Top
4-Air Max 97
5-Air Max 90
They are all timeless to me… That’s the reason.

good job, G! AM is mad cool peoples, had known about him for years from when we were both interviewed for ’sneakerheads,’ a documentary that never came out but was filmed in ‘02-’03. just met him this year, through dj eli, real chill. on the dj tip, he’s way more insane than his sneaker game. his cuts, blends, remixes, and chance taking is all worth what he gets paid per gig . . .

It seems that DJ AM is very fortunate. Life is indeed a gift. Music is a way to flow through time and the hope is we all cherish it and enhance our life through good times and clean activity – like DJ-ing. See what I’m saying since AM was in the news.
