I was walking down 8th Ave. today, and saw a new bike shop between 114th and 115th St. I’ve had my same Gary Fisher mountain joint for over six years, so I thought it’d be worth to take a peek inside. Wow! Turns out my homeboy Oye’ Carr, PHD, is the owner. He and I went to Wesleyan University together years ago. Mad proud of the brother. Shop is ill, too–mad exclusive overseas brands, plus a repair shop in the back. For those of you like me who stay on two wheels in the summer when you cruising looking for pick-up or trying to get from a Dog Show game over to Kingdome, let Mod Squad Cycles be your next pit stop. They even got the ill fix bikes with one speed. That used to be the old school way to get your bungees ridiculous. I remember mad dudes at the Goat Park in the ’70s would show up on their fix, hop off, call next, then bang it on suckers snoozin’ on the low rim. Crazy. Here’s the info:

New bike shops are good, single speeds rule!

single speeds do rule. and daniele, little known fact but i used to race years ago, category 4 here in the states. i wasn’t that good at it, but it provided a nice breather when i got cut from the ball squad at my college. i trained 25 miles a day, owned a benotto champagne frame with campagnola parts, had good form and knew how to spin and all that. those days are long gone, however i stay on bike all the time nowadays to get to adn from places. it’s good for my health, the environment, and lessens traffic. i’ve been to foreign countries where the bicycle culture is huge. it benefits everyone and there are no drawbacks.

Nice! I didn’t start dunking until I was riding a bike regularly. I actually spent two years riding a bike every day except during winter time when I was walking and it was during this time that I really started throwing it down. Now I have a specialized rock hopper (nothing too fancy) that I use constantly. Of course I live in Utah so during the winter I have drive everywhere.

Bikes !! Stu Barnett (Kennedy High-mid 80’s) rode to a City Wide game I played in. His calves were dumb hulkish. I started that game and John Morton (Riverside’s starting 2- and my neigborhood homey- Walton High-mid 80’s) said my team was in for a long nite. After Moses Scurry dunked like 4x on my center (we were down like 11 zip- he couldn’t shoot free-throws) I actually took matters into my own hand advanced the ball quickly while the crowd was crazy. Leaned in stepped back, with a shoulder fake, froze Morton and pulled deep. As the ball softly began to fall into the net, Stu jumped up reached into the rim and threw my shot over the Richmond fence. The crowd really got crazy but that bike gave Stu hops for sure.

ahmad! do you remember coco from goat park? used to touch above the box on the backboard? he got those hops running stairs, wearing ankle weights, and riding a fix. only thing was, but the time he was in his mid-’20s, all that pressure shot his knees to jellyjam. but riding a bike is illmatic for cats trying to te bungees
