JamesOn takes Yi to the rack!
Becoming the leading scorer in any state’s basketball history is a fairly impressive thing to do, but it is an illustrious position when the state is North Carolina. Outside the Midwest, it is difficult to find any place in the country that appreciates the round ball more than NC. Scoring 3,037 points during his career at Eastern Alamance High School, JamesOn Curry became NC’s all time leading scorer in 2004. A scholarship to UNC was in place and chance to certainly crack the Tar Heels rotation as a freshman was only months away. Curry’s career seemed so high, yet it would take some drastic turns that ultimately led to his current position of being out of basketball (for the moment) in 2008.
Curry being out of the L is not like Gerald Green’s work ethic getting him the boot last year, but more along the lines of making some pretty poor life decisions. JamesOn lost his ride to UNC when he was part a huge drug raid at Eastern Alamance. UNC saw him as troubled and not fit for their program, sending NC’s version of Dajuan Wagner (Curry averaged a ridiculous 40.2ppg, 7.3 rebounds, and 6 assists his senior year) to play for the Cowboys of Oklahoma State. In 3 seasons with the Cowboys, Curry averaged an underwhelming 13.5 ppg and was part of early NCAA tournament exits each year.
The Chicago Bulls made Curry the 51st pick in the ‘07 draft. Rather than getting NBA experience alongside fellow rookie Aaron Gray, Curry was subjected to the D-League’s Iowa Energy. JamesOn actually did average 20.2 ppg, 3.2 rebounds, and 5.5 assists while with the Energy, but another off the court issue held him up again. During a road trip to play the Idaho Stampede, Curry was arrested for urinating in public. The Bulls fined him and eventually cut him loose after he pleaded guilty to pubic intoxication and public disturbance in Boise, Idaho.
Pau-Orthez of the French league, ( a squad that features former D-leaguers, Andre Emmett and Hirum Fuller as well as former Xavier standout Josh Duncan) signed Curry in October. He was cut before he ever suited up for a game and is currently a free agent. (The Bulls still paid Curry $100,000 for this current year, yet he is not with the club in any way) JamesOn’s choices off the hardwood leave a lot to ponder. Is Curry too troublesome for the League? Does he have a chance to make it back to the top level? Where would his career be if he was given the opportunity to play for Roy Williams? So many questions surround a young career that may have been cut short before it could really begin.

Pretty sure it’s “urinating” unless “yearinating” is something the kids are doing these days.

with james on, the question has never been about talent. if he doesn’t do anything with it, he’ll regret it as he matures and grows older, wondering what might have been.

Given the opportunity of a lifetime to make 100’s of thousands of dollars and he ruins it with off the court issues. That’s what happens when you give inner city kids lots of money and no responsibility. Look at
Plaxico. Nice pick of Yi making some effort though.

I am just glad UNC stood their ground and dropped the kid. He was selling to other kids in the school. He will screw up any chance he gets, he needs to move back to Mebane.
