Bounce Magazine contributing photographer Justin Francis caught this court in the woods somewhere up North in New England recently:

Does playing on a dirt/grass surface improve your handle or your passing?
Is it difficult to play intense at a court this scenic?
If a bear hits a jumper in the woods, does anyone hear it?

yes, no and no
anytime you see a rim its automatic intensity. it could be nerf, or a trash can, or socks in a clothes hamper you tryin not to miss.

I lived in Montana for a year and played on a rim very similar to this that my brother and neighbor put up in my neighbors yard across town my cousin had the same one in his yard. We had many-o-hard fought battles on those courts me being a UNLV fan and my neighbor being an Arkansas fan (S. Augmon vs T.Day). It surely doesn’t hurt your handles thats for sure but if you’ve ever played class C ball in Montana you have to get used to playing in gyms with dead spots all over the floors similar to avoiding land mines. This always meant home court was truly an advantage!

Illest,
I agree with your comments about the true nature of a ball fiend. It does not matter, I played with milk crates as a hoop or the corner opening of a folding closet, with one of those minitaure balls from the toy store.
Oh, this looks like many hoops I have played on in the South during summer vacations; where sometimes the playing surface is, even, gravel.
As for Bears, if it is not a logo siginfying the NBA Team, then the Grizzlies win by default. They tend not to call their own fouls.

Oh yeah, alot of hoops around my area are like this since we’re in the boondox! But i think the most difficult terrain i’ve played on was my buddy’s crushed rock driveway with a small wooden backboard that was rigged up on a telephone pole.
Those are some good ole memories.

Let’s put it this way, if you’re a baller–you got game!!
Doesn’t matter whether you’re playing on the blacktop, the hardwood, dirt, grass, or the moon!!
I say: it may affect your leaping ability and may not cause as many injuries, but in theory…ball is ball.

when i was about 11 i stacked up an old babies crib and some plastic chairs on top of a table in my back yard, and played with a cheap rubber ball that had no grip. the “rim” was the back and two arms of the highest chair. it was only about 7 or 8 feet high but that was okay for me. looking back i’m surprised my parents didn’t have me examined by a mental health professional.
oh wait i just remembered something else – i also used the branch of a tree as a goal! (say bump say kin, haha) it was flexible so i imagined myself dunking on a breakaway rim like Shaq. the madness finally ended when i got a real hoop for my 13th birthday.

Having grown up in New England, this is not a foreign sight to me….
The best was full contact snow ball, being the ground is not pavement, rough tackling type play was something acceptable…
Shucks, I remember having full court “dunk” hoops on a dead end road…..
To be young and imaginative again….
