Yeah my favorite basketball movie of all time well I got 2 movies but my favorite overall is Spike Lee production “He Got Game” featuring Ray Allen

My second is Blue Chips featuring Shaq and Penny Hardaway. But I have to go with He Got Game.

  2. Eric R. says:

    “The Fish that Saved Pittsburgh”
Classic 70’s feel, plus Dr. J and Meadowlark Lemon in the same flick (?)– nuts. The slow motion dunk scene with Doc in street clothes is so cheesy but beautiful at the same time.

  3. 40 cal says:

He got game is number 1 all time, cause it was a pretty accurate perspective on what life can be like as a teenager playing ball in new york city with the twist of superstardom.

  4. khalfani says:

he got game and love and basketball.
    they were gud

  5. shakir says:

my favorite movie is hoop dreams it showed how dreams can be defered like when your young and you play ball you think your going to the nba But william gates show how even when your good at something people find way to not make it fun and there is more things than ball and plus you see the hard road arthur agee took with him getting kick out of that private school and had to go to a local public school at the end of the day sum times its not me to be the movie is real and it open up my eyes to how it really is thats why its my favorite

  6. kemp4prez says:

My basketball flick was Above the Rim!!! I must have rented the VHS 20 times when it first came out until i saved up my allowance and bought it. It showed everything from the high school game to college recruiting drama, the scout was none other then Pee Wee Kirkland! Plus the “Shoot-Out” tourney at the end had some dope streetball and James “Speedy” Williams was runnin point for the red squad.

The acting was great too, R.I.P Bernie Mac

  7. Trevor Kapp says:

you can call it cliche or whatever you want but when it comes down to it, it’s Hoosiers. The fight and the ejection scenes are to this day two of the best in any basketball movie. the clapping scene in the locker room is unparalleled too. you might not wanna admit it but anyone who played high school ball did that at least once. hoops dreams is love & basketball are good, but at the end of the day, it’s all about jimmy chitwood.

  8. Colby says:

“He Got Game”, the Legend of Jesus Shuttlesworth, for sure is my favorite ball movie. The moment that makes the movie is when Denzel gets out of jail and buys the Jordan XIII. That scene and that shoe just represented something bigger about city life and basketball.

  9. ryan rhodes says:

through the fire if you want an inspirational movie to get you pumped before a bball season its the only movie to watch it shows how he comes from having nothing to having his biggest dream come true. his family went from his older brother being undrafted to having sebastian go pro and although he hasnt been the biggest star yet i see him being like chauncey billups and getting at all star caliber in his later years ive seen he’s got game its really good but i think through the fire has the slight edge im fifteen and a aspiring hooper so this was the perfect movie for me

  10. Feets Malone says:

My first choice would be The Phish That Saved Pittsburgh – Dr. Jay was my fave growing up and I appreciated the gentle giantness of Moses Malone. Plus it featured a kid that adored his favorite team and I secretly wanted to be that kid. BUT since Eric R picked that, I have to go with my all time #2 COME FLY WITH ME. From Julius to Michael was an easy transition and MJ for me was closer in age and looked more like me! I studied this movie like it was an SAT prep book, practiced the moves in my house like I was Duane Martin in Inkwell, and every chance I got stuck out my tongue and spread my legs on every lay up!!!

  11. Lis says:

my favorite basketball movie is space jam haha love michael jordan and bugs bunny :)

  12. Rahaman Kilpatrick says:

I’d have to say my fav bball movie is Soul in the Hole. I had read an article in Sport Illustrated about Booger (he was on the cover) and that was one of my first intro to NYC playground basketball and after reading about him I couldn’t wait to see the movie. I think the thing that had it for me was it was only released in NY and @ the time I was living in Philly. I can remember going to EVERY bootleg stand in philly looking for this movie and NO ONE knew what I was talking about. I remember even going up to Harlem and trooping up and down 125th trying to find it and cats in NY didn’t know what I was talking about! So I kinda just gave up on it only to find out a year or two later it was being released. I remember renting the movie from blockbuster and coming home and sitting down @ the tv watching this movie the way folk watch these Obama debates now! I mean excitement wasn’t even a word. Being able to finally see Booger do all the tricks I read about and just seeing NYC summer ball tournaments was crazy! Not to mention Charles Jones being on Kenny’s team with Booger! I think for me it was just the movie being authentic is what did it for me. I loved He Got Game (catch it evevrytime it’s on cable) but could never take Ray Allen serious as a cat from Coney Island…so…yeah Soul in the Hole is it for me. It was like searching for that ill record you can NEVER find and when you do find it…it’s like…awwwwww!

  13. Rahaman Kilpatrick says:

Just a FYI on the Soul in the Hole jawn…I was ONLY looking for the bootleg cause it wasn’t in ANY movie theaters and I was DYING to see it…and if you’re from the hood and the movie isn’t in theaters…you go to the bootleg man! But mos def, if I could have caught it in theaters I would’ve supported the movie with my last dub. I’m proud to say that I PURCHASED the DVD to show my financial support to the movie!

  14. Malik Lloyd says:

My favorite of all time is he got game. This movie sparked my interest in the game i would soon fall in love with. Also it featured that father son thing and my father in I also have a rivalry but strictly on the court. 2nd is got to be through the fire it reminds me alot of Cashmere Wright.

  15. Alex from AZ says:

    Spike Lee’s He Got Game.

In my personal opinion no basketball movie (that I’ve seen) has been able to stand alone as both a great movie and a great basketball movie. He Got Game’s ability to speak to those not familiar with basketball culture and act as a far reaching introduction, is why I believe it stands above the rest. From the beauty of the opening montage, to the depth and poetry of its soundtrack, to the way it was able to encapsulate the hopes and dreams of every player at the pre-professional level in a way that is still relevant…it is truly a lasting testament to why we play.

When I show it to friends who have never heard of it and wouldn’t have seen it otherwise, I am amazed at its ability to transform people’s perception of the game to something far deeper. It is, at its essence, the American dream in a package that most of America is not accustomed to seeing and elevates and explains basketball from a simple game, to a life style to finally a frame of mind.

  16. gabrielo says:

i’ll go with He Got Game but not for the movie itself but for the opening montage set to the Aaron Copland music, that brought me chills as an eighth-grader watching how beautiful the game of basketball can be, backdoor cuts, shaking the imaginary defender for the layup, using a milk crate for a hoop, from the now torn down Cabrini-Green projects in Chicago to the Indiana cornfields, the love of the game is the same all over, crossing all racial and economic boundaries

  17. Seldom Seen says:

I realize it was not a movie but The White Shadow T.V series was a favorite

  18. Mac says:

Hard one to choose from but I have to go with what most said before me, which is He Got Game. I’m from Brooklyn myself and use to live around Coney Island so this movie show a place I know very well. I really liked the He Got Game soundtrack with PE.

The movie seem to me like a modify story of Stephon Marbury life.

  19. Alistair Jones says:

He got game is easily the best basketball film. As it is more complete than any other basketball movie released. You have the roots of basketball at the start of the movie kids/teens shooting hoops in the yard and playing ball in local playgrounds across the states. You get a great feeling of nostalgia with movie, public enemy, Black jesus(earl the pearl highlights, fab 5 ( link to Jesus’s high school team) and coney islands finest starbury. Denzel great acting and Dr J fro seeing his face light up as he gets the new Jordan’s we can all relate to that. No other film shows that type of sneakerhead get joy when buying a new pair of sneakers. The pressure jesus goes through when picking to go to college or the pro’s. The money offered by the agent and rick fox taking Jesus round campus having girls availiable day and night to him. Personal friends family trying to take advantage la la looking out for herself the whole time and his money grabin g uncle wanting a cut of what he thought Jesus was making. Most of all the movie shows how Jesus and his relationship with his dad improves as the talk they have at the amusement park about the meaning of Jesus and the One on One games they have in the park shows how Jake pushed Jesus to be the best.

  20. Da Coach says:

“Hoosiers” is by far the best basketball movie of all time. It is a story of second chances with Norman Dale getting a chance to affect young people again and a town gets a second chance at glory. The movie covers everything that a team needs to have in order to be successful: teamwork, hard work, coaching, belief in your teammates and the system, and unselfishness.

Not only does the movie bring to light those characteristics of a successful team it is also based on historical facts. It has also provided arguably one of the best sports quotes of all time:

“I’m going to break them down and build them back up.”

These things coupled with the fact that the special edition DVD of “Hoosiers” has the original game footage for Hickory High then you have my favorite basketball movie of all time. In fact, I’m a high school varsity girls basketball coach and each year, a few days before the season begins, I watch the movie to get mentally prepared for what is to come.

  21. 1prwitnikes says:

you are all mistaken how can everybody forget Glory Road 1966 all black starting five take on Kentucky Adolff Rupp and featuring Pat Riley, yo just hit me off with my dvd and t-shirt it’s a wrap….it also happens to be a true story.

  22. trayBAGZ!! says:

love and basketball…..met my wife in college while playing in open gym….she was playing then i was playing….so now since my son ROCKS, we alawys talking about the movie and who yung ju gets different aspects of his game from…..

  23. g says:

    my joints are:
1.(Nike) Battlegrounds 03′, primarily cause I was there for the games to watch my goons Mike Campbell and Junie go at it with the rest of the dudes that survived the regional battlegrounds like Paul McPherson (Chi), Erron Maxey (L.A),Hugh Jones aka Baby Shaq (D.C),etc.
    2. The Real: Rucker Park legends, arguably one of the most informative pieces you could see as far as the history of the Rucker and Mr. Holcombe Rucker and his efforts to give back to the community thru basketball. Mr. Rucker really put his work in,alot of facets of his community based work and outreach programs i had no idea about prior to the film. And the players that came thru there were phenomenal. If you want to get to know about NYC ball history, thats the joint to peep.
    3. Soul in the Hole, for the obvious reason,my lil goon Boogs and plus super Bob helped formulate a tough soundtrack to go with it. the ball footage is tough, but it captures the struggles that both “street” coaches and players endure reaching for the limelight.
    4. Hoop Dreams, the strife those dudes endured to try and reach their dreams…tough, vivid and real!!! its relatable, whether your from Watts, 5th ward Houston, Liberty City or Brownsville.
    5. Asphalt Phenoms, D Black (Dorian Graham) did a great job of gathering footage and interviews from bonafide NYC ball dudes about the current state of playground ball in nyc,the history of nyc playground ball and what really makes a ball legend (direct stab at And 1).

  24. nosmelone says:

Without a doubt Soul In The Hole took it for me, this wasn’t just a favority basketball movie this is my favorite movie of all time. I can completely ditto Rahamans thoughts. I too studied this movie like my life depended on it. My kids none older that 6 years old they know how much I love basketball and they all know who booger is. I’ve done numerous pieces of artwork that feature Boogs as well (I’m an artist/animator for a living).

I was saddened to hear while watching “King of the Streets” documentary one of boogers old coaches at Yuma AZ “The Matadors” (the one who says “I’ve coached division 1 and I’ve never seen anyone who can do things with the ball that booger can”) say that of course booger was amazing with the ball but that when he came to Arizona he only had a second grade reading level. I went to Chandler-Gilbert community college in Arizona (we played against Yuma as well) and know that the curriculum that we followed would have been absolutly impossible with anything less than a normal high school education, let alone a second grade reading level. Those important school years are truly what caused Boogers failure to make it to the next level.

  25. Azucar says:

I gotta go with Above the Rim. It mixed the street game with organized basketball. I hate these basketball movies that include actors that can’t play ball. You could tell that the star, Duane Martin had game. He looked like a legitimate ball player. Plus Leon’s shot looked like it was on point. And who doesn’t love a movie with the late greats, Tupac (Birdie) and Bernie Mac (Flip). “Let’s play for some real live Bonx!!!”

The soundtrack was dope to, that Tupac “Pain” intro was nice.

  26. Audie 5000 says:

Bro ‘ the best ball movie by far Above The Rim ! 55th is the ball court , Tupac in Harlem and Deathrow Records movie soundtrack ! You can’t beat that. Streetball at its finest. Harlem stand up !

  27. Shane says:

And1 mixtape vol 1. It introduced the world to what New Yorker’s had been witnessing for years. That mixtape caused a revolution and changed the way kids play basketball, both good and bad. It also provided an avenue for players to make something of themselves in the game basketball even if they were not cut out for the NBA or some other form of organized ball.

I see you making some crisp passes on some of those mixtapes Bobbito. Skip to my Lou, greatest streetball player ever!

  28. Hypostatic says:

I can’t believe everybody is sleepin on “Above the Rim” !!!!!!!!!!! (Extra Exclamations 4 emphasis!) Soul in the Hole, He Got Game, and Blue Chips was indeed dope, but in my opinion, Above the Rim is better for quite a few reasons.

#1) This was a film I loved primarily for it’s basketball choreography. It was actually good! It looked and felt like real NY streetball. The alleys that were thrown, the crossovers, the crowds was all hype. I remember this one move that Duane Martin did in that joint that ERRBODY was tryin at the courts that year! It wasn’t like that fake basketball choreography you find in most movies (like Martin Lawrence’s “Rebound” or somethin like dat! Stuff that looks so unreal makes me wanna vomit).

#2)The plot in the movie was good. You had your typical cat in the hood tryin to make it to the League, yet you had these side issues like Leon gettin with Kyle’s Mom, and Birdie and Leon being brothers, and Leon’s guilt over Nutso’s death, so you had these side issues that added depth to the movie and made it realistic.

#3)The Acting was good. What good is a good plot if the acting is horrible? But in this joint, you had Tupac playing a totally believable drug dealin, hustlin dude that had the block on lock with a razor blade in his mouth, Bernie Mac and Marlon Wayans came thru and gave it that comedic aspect that was hilarious. Leon actually made u believe he was crazy, Wood Harris was doin the Dope Boy thing before it was even popular (and before The Wire)and he was believable too(especially when he tried to cap cats and pistol whip dudes in broad daylight and in public)and Duane Martin/”Kyle” got heated when “Montross” was givin him buckets in front of the scout that came to see him, he was totally believable and the fact that he could actually handle the rock and didn’t need a “stunt double” to play ball like in some of these other movies. It was during this time that I was so impressed with his skills in the movie, that I researched Duane Martin and found out that he actually had an opportunity to play for the Knicks in real life.

#4)The soundtrack was bangin. That joint had Regulate by Nate Dogg and Warren G, Pour out a little liquor by Pac, and a bunch of other joints from people who was hot (at the time) like H-Town and Lady of Rage. The sounds were appropriate for the film.

#5)Lastly, this movie was inspirational. Tell me that when they showed “Kyle” doin his workout routine To Snoop Dog’s song that you didn’t wanna go out and start doin this routine too! And when he made his dream come true of ballin for Georgetown (and made the winning bucket at the end)tell me that you didn’t wanna shed a tear and then get your boys to go meet you on the court in like 5 minutes! Bangin film!

  29. boston john says:

the best ball movie of all time has to be white men cant jump.

    trevor kapp runs this mag

  30. JChau says:

There’s quite a few out there. Coach Carter. Hoosiers. They both not only show a game of basketball; but the barriers that go through for basketball. It’s ain’t just about playing the game; it’s about how hard you work for the game. But I must admit, my favourite bball-related movie must be ‘He Got Game’.

Ray Allen and Denzel portrayed their roles really well. Besides basketball, the movie stresses the importance of family, before anything else. Family is key, RayRay and Denzel portrayed that ideology really well.

  31. Risse says:

    1. Hoop Dreams
    2. Soul in the Hole

  32. A. Ford says:

Hey bounce I’m reading these blog on the movies I picked for my all time which was He Got Game. A lot of people agree that it was their all time favorites. He got game inspired me to work hard in the game I love and appreciate family values. No matter what people say about you family will always be there. Plus it was taped @ Lincoln and Coney the hood I will never forget and always give back to. Since a lot of people agreed about these movies I feel I should be one of the contest winners.

  33. Bobbito Garcia a.k.a. Kool Bob Love says:

    to all-

there is a difference to saying ‘my favorite of all-time’ compared to ‘the greatest of all-time.’ none of you can make that claim unless you’ve really watched every single b-ball movie and can have fair judgement. it’s like wehn i see magazines claim ‘the greatest draft class of all-time’ or whatever else, their guess is only as qualified as their age. not to discount young people’s opinions, but you also can’t discount the past when making calls like that . . .

anyhoo, MY favorite film would be hoosiers from 1987, then one on one with robby benson from 1977. for those of you who grew up in the ’90s and missed these, take a chance and rent them if possible. a more recent b-ball film that gets majorly slept on is sunset park. oh, blue chips was terrible! sorry. my favorite doc of all-time would be hoop dreams. just my opinion!

  34. Audie 5000 says:

Hey can you include Cornbread Earl and Me as a ball movie ? Hahahaha

  35. RJ says:

Spike Lee’s He Got Game is my all-time favorite basketball movie.

Jake Shuttlesworth rockin’ the old school Julius ” Dr.J ” Erving afro and goatee in 1998… The unusual yet oddly appropriate usage of composer Aaron Copland’s music… Denzel Washington dropping buckets on Ray Allen… The ill Public Enemy track of the same name… The story of Jesus Shuttlesworth

” Basketball is like poetry in motion, cross the guy to the left, take him back to the right, he’s fallin’ back, then just J right in his face. Then you look at him and say, ‘What?’ ” – Jesus Shuttlesworth

The story of Arthur Agee and Williams Gates in the documentary Hoop Dreams is another all-time favorite.

” People say, ‘When you make it to the NBA, don’t forget about me.’ I feel like telling them, ‘Well, if I don’t make it, make sure you don’t forget about me.’ ” – William Gates

I love basketball and I’ve been looking forward to seeing “Gunnin’ For That #1 Spot” for a while. I would appreciate the DVD prize more than you know.

  36. SupaStar24 says:

I think everyone is forgetting a classic. I know it’s not exactly a basketball movie but it sums up a situation I think we’ve all seen and probably have experienced first-hand. “Cooley High” was not a basketball movie in the sense that the other movies that have been mentioned are basketball movies. “Cooley High” was real.

How many of us knew of someone like Cochise that had it made, going to school on a scholarship and then something tragic happened? It sums up the urban basketball experience in so many different ways. The scene where Cochise runs home to check the mail to see if he got his letter from the college he wants to go to only to find that the baby had put it in the toilet!

On top of that, the movie gave us the classic song, “It’s So Hard To Say Goodbye To Yesterday.”

The tragedy gave way to the scene at the end where Preach cannot attend the funeral but pours out a little for the homie and vows to change. It’s sums up so many tales from different communities and backgrounds that it cannot be overlooked even though it’s not your typical basketball movie.

  37. dueces says:

as much as i love He Got Game because of ray ray, denzel, spike’s direction, and rosario dawson, i got to give it to the classic “tough coach plus tough kids somehow equals a mad heartwarming basketball story” that is COACH CARTER. most importantly, it was the first time i was introduced to the “our deepest fear” quote, which literally added to my life. if you’ve never read the whole thing, you should. it’s awesome.

    check it:

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn’t serve the world. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

  38. peter says:

    I gotta say…

    He Got Game:
    - Jesus Shuttlesworth is the best name EVER
    - Denzel was prepping himself for Training Day
    - Public Enemy killed that single!

    Above the Rim:
    - the story was actually believable and dealt with realer issues than he got game
    - GREATEST SOUNDTRACK OF ALL TIME

    Honorable Mentions:
    - Eddie: Just because whoopi called avery johnson a cockroach pause
    - Space Jam: THE XIs were so beautiful
    - The pistol pete movie: Son was spinnin a ball on his finger for like 5 hours

  39. Audie 5000 says:

Ayo ya’ll also forgot White Shadow ! Cool show man !

  40. PFTB says:

My “favorite”basketball movies of all time is Above the Rim and One on One.
I liked Above the Rim because the story is believable with real ballplayers (Speedy,Dorian Graham etc)good actors(Tupac who in my opinion was a better actor than rapper,Wood Harris, thugged to the max!,Henry Simmons etc.)and actors/ballplayers (Duane Martin & Leon who both played college ball). The story line covered alot of angles with basketball being the central structure.Plus the comic genius of Marlon Wayans(he killed me when he told Wood Harris “you need a hug” after he pistol whipped the 2 drug dealers) and the late great Bernie “Flip” Mac.Plus the soundtrack was crazy. All you need is your favorite snack & beverage and its complete.
“One on One” really showed how the recruiting /college business is run.How coaches can coddle you during recruitment and then treat you like nothing when you get to campus.Robby Benson was a little undersized, but he did show some decent handles and his jumper looked legit.Plus his character (Henry Steele)showed alot of character, after awhile not caring about his scholarship, but just wanting to show that he COULD play at that level after all the mental & physical abuse he took.Plus he had one of the great basketball movie lines of all,”That guy from New York,he’s got moves I’ve never seen before” CLASSIC.KBL you KNOW what I’m talkin’about.

  41. PFTB says:

Yo,SupaStar24 Cooley High is my favorite movie of all time, but they didn’t play enough ball in it.But one of the all time greats nonetheless.
Yo,dueces, thanks for putting up that deepest fear quote.Good stuff.
White Shadow hands down best basketball show EVER,even though they only had 3 legit players on the show.Coach Reeves,Coolidge and Teddy Rutherford (Wolfe Perry who actually played at Stanford in the “70’s).But what made the show great were the story lines which are still relevant today! They need to do a remake of that show.

  42. K. Easy says:

Hoop Dreams HANDS DOWN!!! I mad love for He Got Game and White Men Can’t Jump, Heaven is a Playground, Sunset Par…(nah no way) But Hoop Dreams summed it all up to me. The passion of playing-growing up with the game and also dealing with life outside of the parkay. The whole movie stil has me routing for Agee and Gates even though i’ve seen their outcome over and over on screen and in my own reality. One thing that’s not tragic is their love for the game and their will to survive no matter what…epic, str8 up…

  43. Can says:

My favorite basketball related movie is definitely “White Men Can’t Jump”. I know it isn’t the best cinematic production ever, but it just sorta hit the right spot for me. Let me explain.

Being from a very small town in Canada the only basketball we were exposed to was in a very organized manner. When Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelsson (spelling?) came out and started hustling people with these moves that almost seemed like double dribble’ss and travel’s but were still legal, it was very eye opening. I can’t remember exactly but I do believe the Wesley Snipes threw the ball behind someone’s back for game point and it just opened all our eyes. After the movie, my friends and I were fully in a discussion on which moves were legal and which were not, disecting each and every one that we remembered.

This is why White Men Can’t Jump is my favorite Basketball related movie.

  44. B says:

    HEAVEN IS A PLAYGROUND!!!

I can’t believe eveyone slept on this one! I know it was a book, but as a kid I remember watching the movie and instantly going out that night to shoot around.
PLEASE check this movie out. Anything that makes you want to go play ball in the pouring rain, wind, cold or dark most definietly gets my vote.

I can’t front though the other movies are all good too, but I think Heaven is a Playground is the one. Check it out
