If you’re anywhere near the DC area this weekend, you’ll want to swing by Barry Farms for the start of the Goodman League playoffs. If Monday’s action was any indication, it’s about to be on like hot buttered popcorn.
Andrew “SpongeBob” Washington put it in on Monday night, dropping Fitty-Two (52!) for his undefeated Shooters team. Who was the comp you might ask? How about the All Daz (pronounced All Days) crew featuring Duke’s Nolan Smith and the most recent #2 picks in the draft and DC area natives Mike Beasley and Kevin Durant.
The game, a double-overtime 139-133 thriller, became an instant classic in the formidable archives of Goodman lore. Sponge Bob, at 6-foot-2 and 215lbs, is a smaller lefty version of Sir Charles who scorched the Mexican Pro League by averaging 41 pts, 7 re’s and 6 dimes a game this season for Lazaro Cardenas Tiburones. He’s just plain relentless under the basket, utilizing his rare athleticism to throw down monster power dunks, over bigger opposition, often without a running start.
With 1:43 left in the first OT, All Daz was in control 125-120 and seemed to have the game in hand when Smith fed B-Easy for slam. But SpongeBob led a burst that tied it up. In the second OT, Durant fouled out and Shooters’ Gerald “Fenty” Hilliard squeezed off 8 points to keep the Shooters record unblemished.
Beasley had 44 and Durant 35. The playoffs tip on Friday at around 6:30pm.
