Coach Cal has had his share of superstars come through the college ranks. Names like Derrick Rose, Rodney Carney, Shawne Williams, Dajuan Wagner, and Marcus Camby have all balled for Cal. Prior to any of the above mentioned names was a little known All-American player from Atlantic City, NJ. His name is Lou Roe.
Roe is currently playing for Polaris World Murcia in the Spanish ACB league, a squad that includes former NCAA standouts, Taquan Dean (Louisville) and Chris Thomas (Notre Dame). His average this past season was 12.9 ppg and 5.4 boards a game while starting at small forward. Aside from spending a minimal amount of time in the NBA, (Roe was drafted as the first pick in the second round of the ’95 draft by the Pistons)Having played a year for Detroit and a year for Golden State, Roe has made a name and a living for himself playing in Spain for close to 9 years.
With career averages of 18.3 ppg and 7.6 rebounds, Roe has made multiple appearances in the ACB All-Star game and also was considered for MVP of the league during the ’03-04 season. Roe has also played professionally overseas in Italy and South Korea as well as in the States for the CBA (pre-Isaiah). While his better years may be behind him, Roe has left a lasting legacy in Atlantic City and at the University of Massachusetts. Shortly after his All-American senior season in ’95, Roe’s number 15 jersey was raised to the rafters of the Mullins Center. There it joined the likes of Al Skinner (Head Coach at BC) and Dr. J (no explanation needed) as the greatest to ever ball for the Minutemen.
Lou Roe is the pride of Atlantic City hoops and the most successful player to ever come from the city. If you live in a small to mid-size market such as Atlantic City, who would you consider the most successful player from your city?

Lou Roe ruled! But he was the size of an NBA small forward with the game of a power forward, beyond mere “tweener” status.

This is my dude played with him for 2 years in the spainsh league (ACB). We played in the city of Sevilla. Can I tell you I watched him do things that you only see on the big stage meaning that NBA. He is a “tweener” so to speak, but he could of done it for sure and worked out. As you guys not there are guys in the league that are called that as well. With his hart and ability if put in the right situation he could or better said would of been done it with no problem. Also remember he got better with age which is alway a plus. As far as I can see he has been the best pro for yrs and probably one of the best players in europe and probably one of the best non NBA player that ever played the game that took his game internationally. DO nto forget as well he is from the tri state area, AC. But also remember he played in the league for two seasons. Great Article!!

I’m agree with DP. Roe is one of the best players in Europe and also one of the best players NOT IN NBA. He can play like a leader and make things happend when the game is almost loss.

Wow, Did he say Traveiso?
I recently read that Shawn Respert had Cancer. I never understood why he wasn’t in the league.

Lou Roe is the man! Lou Coached my 12 year old UMass Summer league team to the finals when I was 12 (12 years ago) and taught me to keep my head straight on the court. You could always tell he really cared for all of the kids in the camp. He was the reason I started to love basketball.. watching him and Camby lead the 94 minutemen to the final 4 was unreal to watch. I then went on to play at UMass myself (UMass Boston.. close enough!) Lou if you read this shit.. you’re the man!
