Jesse Tompkins Rest In Peace / Aug 5, 2008 / 2:20 am

This is something we don’t enjoy doing . . .

Last week, we reported on teenager Andre Davidson’s early passing while playing at St. Mary’s gym.

This week, we sadly announce the tragic death of Nike NRF League Team Huarache guard Jesse Tompkins. He allegedly was struck by a car while jogging.

Jesse was a filmmaker who moved to NYC. He joined the NRF League in ‘05-’06, and was an integral part of Team Huarache’s campaign to the Finals in ‘08 where they took 2nd place on the floor of Madison Square Garden this past June.

On behalf of all of us here at Bounce Magazine and Dime, we express our deepest condolences to his family and his teammates, some of which work in our offices.

Jesse was a great teammate as well as a great person. He was the glue guy that held our NRF team together.

I used to joke with him about his DC/Baltimore accent. Lol.

Damn man, this sh*t hurts. We all miss you already.

I played with Jesse for the last three years in the NRF and I will 100% echo what Christian said in post #2 - Jesse was a phenomenal teammate and an even better person. He will be sorely missed.

My condolences to the family, friends and NRF teammates of Jesse Tompkins. He was a stand-up cat with a great personality. On the court, he was always the X factor. Speed, hustle and work ethic. A fellow NW/DC native!!! We’re all going to miss him.

I was on Atlantic Ave. Sunday, right around the time of the accident. I saw the the two SUV’s in the collision but I had no idea a pedestrian was involved…we lost one of the good ones.

    August 03, 2008

Police were investigating Sunday evening a Brooklyn car crash that witnesses said involved a jogger.

According to a police officer, the accident happened around 3:45 p.m., when a white Escalade made a left turn on Vanderbilt Avenue and struck a Volkswagen SUV.

Eyewitnesses said a jogger was struck.

As of 6 p.m. Sunday, officials would not confirm the involvement of a jogger, and said the police investigation was still going on.

I’ve known Jesse since he was in the 3rd grade in Washington, DC. He was always a kind hearted and gentle person who loved to laugh and make people happy. I remember him being in his first basketball league. At the age of 9 or 10 the coach was highly impressed with Jesse’s “tenacity”. (smile) We’ve lost such a bright star who had so much to give. Please keep Jesse’s parents and his sister in your thoughts and prayers.

Raina, I only saw the impact. I wasnt close enough to see causation i.e who disregarded the traffic control device. I saw the vehicles collide only because the escalade was so large, I didnt see the other vehicle until after I cleared the intersection. I was maybe 4-5 car lengths from the light, heading west on Atlantic Ave,so my view was a tad impeded. I didnt see Jesse nor did I know there was a pedestrian involved until I saw this posting. Didnt hear any brakes applied either.
    Hope this is helpful….

  15. Raina says:

Thank you. I appreciate it. If you hear of anyone who actually witnessed the accident, please let me know.

Hi there. I’m a good friend of Jesse’s and was his roommate for the last 3 yrs in NYC. Jesse’s mom is starting a foundation for young people in the arts in his name. we are organizing events and fundraisers in the city in the next few months. The first will be at Maggie Brown’s where he used to bartend Sunday night. The date is TBA but google the restaraunt and call for info. The most likely date is 9/27. also google Jesse thompkins foundation. I think there has been a website up to take donations. Thanks all you. Love peace, and Jesse…

  17. Jesse's Mom says:
