Lay-Up Line: Instrumental Edition / Aug 3, 2008 / 9:30 am

The Pharcyde caught plenty of recognition during the early part of the ’90s on a bevy of radio shows, including Bobbito’s with Stretch Armstrong on WKCR. Arguably their biggest hits were Runnin’, Passin’ Me By, and Soul Flower, but when I listened to the troupe’s first national release earlier this year (Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde), On The DL instantly caught my attention–not so much for the song’s subject matter, but the cohesion of the piano, sax, hand clapping, and scratching during the chorus is unmistakably dope.

Good find…Wouldn’t quite play Pharcyde in the layup line, but I do have to admit that Cali had the illest emcees in Souls of Mischeif (Bay Area) and Pharcyde (LA) in the 90’s. Dopest videos in hip-hop history Xzibit’s (Watcha see is whatcha get), Pharcyde’s (Drop) that Beastie Boy’s sample just puts that song over the top and the video was the first time I saw that reverse video shot. Emcees from the Bay and Cali that didn’t really get overshadowed but didn’t get as much love, the Saafir battle with Casual, The Coup may have been the realest group along with Public Enemy (in the east on the political tip) and I guess you couldn’t have the 90’s and Cali hip-hop without the Luniz. Man I miss Cali.

On the layup line, I still get pumped when Black Rob comes on (Whoa!)

Oh finally finished the samples I will shoot you an e-mail with some rough pics
