After being spoiled by a week of ridiculously tight match-ups, the last two nights at West 4th haven’t been closely contested at all.
In a three-day span last week, we saw Sundiata Gaines’ three-point bomb keep Young Money Train’s perfect season alive. On Saturday, Q St. Hillaire’s buzzer-beater gave the West the W over the East at the all-star game. So I guess we were due for a bad one, and Sunday afternoon that’s what we got.
The game between Macy’s and United Brooklyn was a blowout from the start to finish. Macy’s, led by Smush Parker’s 32 points and Tim “Headache” Gittens 23, led by 13 after the first and cruised from there.
BK spent more time barking at the refs than actually playing. John Strickland was the lone bright spot, dropping 27, but was tossed with about two minutes left for arguing.
Last night was no different. Be it the Buffalo Braves of ’70-71, the Miami Heat of ’88-89 or the Vancouver Grizzlies of ’95-96, expansion teams have almost always had to pay the price for being the fresh cats on the block.
Fuego Mayical can relate. Last night, they got another lesson, this time from X-Men in a blowout. Fuego was at a disadvantage from the start, as it only suited up six. But it wouldn’t have made a difference. Though tied at 25 at one point, this game was never close as Mike “The Icon” Campbell took over. He led all scorers and finished with 25+. When “The Icon” gets going, he’s as hard to stop as anyone in NYC.
Upcoming schedule:
Macy’s is scheduled to play Money Train Sunday, July 20 at 6:00 p.m.
X-Men is scheduled to face a tougher opponent when it takes on Foot-Print Stars Monday, July 21 at 6:00 p.m.
