The 14th Regiment Armory in Brooklyn opened in 1895, but it wasn’t until March 1910 that the building left its mark on the hoops landscape. With 3,000 onlookers in the house, the Smart Set Athletic Club hosted the Washington 12 Streeters. While the crowd may be miniscule compared to today’s illustrious standards, newspapers such as the New York Age reported, “Never in the history of Brooklyn has such a galaxy of colored peoples assembled under one roof.”
Recently, the gym and other fitness areas of the Armory have been restored. To read more about the historic game between the Smart Set Athletic Club and the 12th Streeters, or to peep more pictures, check out Black Fives Blog
