Lamont “Momo” Jones

Momo and Artest
The first time I went to a Conrad McRae Youth League game two things stuck out in my memory. The first was seeing an 8th grade Keith Spelman dunk on some poor defender so hard the impact of the ball almost decapitated him. The second was seeing a cocky kid name Lamont Jones a.k.a. “Momo” drop 25 against a team being coached by Dwayne “Tiny” Morton. Let me clarify, the kid didn’t show up until the second half . . .
The kid had a swagger that set him apart from most of 8th graders playing that day. Not only did he show up late, but he took his time. I heard kids whispering, “Damn, he only 13 and got a tattoo?” He took off several rosaries and handed them to his jewelry holder (WTF). “Hold my jewelry,” and the kid stood there the whole game holding it. He checked into the game and went to work. He played hard on D and dominated on offense.

Well it looks like not much has changed. Momo is still at it (minus the jewelry holder). He’s entering his senior year at American Christian (home to All-American Tyreke Evans) in Chester, PA after transferring from Rice HS. I hadn’t seen him play in a while when he appeared at the Tri-State Classic last Thursday to do battle against not only Ron Artest, but Kareem Reid. I don’t even remember who won since there were so many questionable calls that they just stopped the game, but I do remember seeing this kid go at Reem and Ron Ron like they were just random cats off the block. He helped his team mount a comeback after being down double digits. Hopefully, the next time he’ll be able to properly earn his stripes and the refs will have their act together so he can finish the contest.
At one time Momo was commited to Louisville. We’ll see how that pans out. A lot of big schools are still interested . . .

props to the other Lamont Jones, brother of Charles Jones, was gave a lot of cats problems playing for Sid Jones’ United Brooklyn squad in the ’90s at West 4th, Nike Pro City, E. Orange Pro-Am, etc. He had a try-out with the Clippers at one point, and enjoyed a very nice salary playing overseas.
thanks for putting me up on the new lamont jones, stanley!

Mom is a good dude and a hell of a shooter. Not only that he pounds the ball like no other. Relentless on D and he fears no one! He’s gonna make a killing, not this fall but next. Look for him on CBS in March, until then keep reading about him torching HS kids who think they can guard him….

Finally someone besides me, see this kid as the real deal. I’m from Glens Falls N,Y (State & Fed. Tourn. Home) and I watched him there a few years ago as a Soph. He has no fear, wants the ball with the game on the line and will succeed at the next 2 levels. I just wished he stayed at Rice but, in his and his family’s best interest, trans to American. BEST OF EVERYTHING TO MO MO..THINK TARHEELS BABY!

I heard he’s playing at St.Anthony in Jersey City for his senior year. That’s gonna be a monster backcourt with him and Dominic Cheek.
