Saturday mornings at the Brownsville Recreation Center are filled with young children sporting their favorite players’ signature shoe and trying their between-the-legs crossovers. Once all the 3-on-3 and 1-on-1 games are over, Darryl Glenn walks into the gym.
Darryl Glenn is a hardworking individual from Brownsville, Brooklyn, who dedicates his time to teaching the youth how to become better individuals through the game. His encouragement and inspiration makes the children perform to their best ability. He uses his personal experiences to reach them, and explains how “helping a friend” changed his life.
With the help of Greg “Jocko” Jackson (a BK legend and former NBA 1970s draft pick), Glenn was sent to Laurinburg Prep in North Carolina (the same school Earl “The Goat” Manigualt attended in the ’60s) as a teenager. With a different mindset and outlook on life, he is the man that he is today. He mentors the children and checks on every kid in the clinic.
The games in the clinic are quite awesome because these kids can play! Glenn nicknamed a kid “IronMan” who may be one of the smallest but has the biggest heart. Another, a young girl, is nicknamed “WNBA.” The NBA’s female equivalent league may very well be her next destination in the future.
Every Saturday you can bring your child to the Brownsville Recreation Center so they can get the experience of the Darryl Glenn Instructional Basketball Clinic. The clinic is FREE and the rewards will last a lifetime.
Randy Millard is currently enrolled at Norfolk St. University in Virginia where he argues every lunch period about how great Brooklyn is. He is happy to be home for the summer!
