On Thursday, United Brooklyn barely fielded five to start their Nike Pro City Game. Last night at West 4th, they decided not to show for their heavyweight bout, of all teams, with last season’s Cage champions Money Train. Several fans were mumbling about how disappointed they were that the contest never materialized. UB Coach Sid Jones should’ve just called Bobbito Garcia! He’s always down to run! (Our EIC was actually a ’90s UB member at West 4th and the E. Orange Pro-Am.)
Those that came out early were treated to a 74-68 comeback victory by Starrett City over Schoolers (Boys & Girls HS) in the high school division. Boys led 47-28 at the half, but Starrett went on a 19-0 run to begin the third quarter and tied things up at 47-47. The game was a see-saw battle for the rest of the way, until Lincoln HS PG Vincent Council gave Starrett a 71-68 lead they never relinquished on a three-point basket with under a minute left.
Anton Dickerson scored a game-high 28 points in a losing effort for Schoolers, while Lamont Samuels chipped in with 17. Sammy Obetoh was the high scorer for Starrett with 19, while Council added 18.
Saturday’s action includes West 4th St. afternoon games and Conrad McCrae Youth League starting in the morning out on Dean St., Brooklyn.
