Meet The Other Championship Celtics / May 22, 2008 / 10:01 am

Front Row (L-R): Leroy “La Luscious Lee” Shaw, “the Architect,” and “Stone Col’ Killer.”
Back Row (L-R): Kirk Joseph, “Speedy” Williams, John “Mardi Gras” Harris, Mike Bantom, “The True Doctor,” “Sweet Lou,” Charles Smith, JR, and announcer AG.

Earlier this May, the Celtics of the Pelham Fritz 38 And Over League in Harlem won their second consecutive chip, beating the Suns. Led by “Speedy” Williams 23 points and unofficial series MVP Charles Smith, they smacked the Suns in two games in the best of three series. Alex Middleton led all scorers with 26 in a losing cause.

They may be the best 40 and Over team in the world. It’s be hard to argue. Let’s look at their roster:

Gus “the Wizard” Williams (DNP–injured): NBA champ and All-Star with the Seattle Supersonics
Mike Bantom: ‘72 USA Men’s Olympic Squad, former NBA player wiht the Nets and Pacers
Charles Smith: former NBA player with the Knicks and Clippers
“Speedy” Williams: EBC @ Rucker legend, invited to Knicks free-agent camp
Leroy “La Luscious Lee” Shaw: former Boston Celtics draft pick, Rucker Pro legend
John “Mardi Gras” Harris: former U. of New Orleans standout

And those are just the known names. The whole crew plays hard. They deserved it.

Do you think the NBA’s Celtics will have a similar result in this year’s Finals?

This was an enjoyable homage to “veterans of wars” (Memorial day reference). I played with and against Dredrick “Ice” Irving during his stay in Boston. It was good to view a pic of him and to see he still has it.
But I am most surprised by the participation of one of my favorite “point gods” of all-time, the “Wizard” Gus Williams. He is in his fifties, does he still have it?

Does the Pelham Fritz have a summer component? If so, I would travel from Beantown to espy the action. And if not, is there another NYC summer 40 and over league?

    Three wings, extra fly!!!

darby classic is doing a 40 and over summer league. when i get more info, i’ll post it here. there is also the rucker pro legends vs. puerto rico pro legends game during harlem week in august, the west 4th st oldtimers game, and king towers joint. new york may be the best place in the world for old folk! dedrick irving was the all-time leading scorer at boston u, probably still is, and we were teammates years back with united brooklyn. great dude and an incredible high flyer, was a joy to watch and pass the ball to him, even when he had the high-top fade, haha!
