Remember Dominique Wilkins’ Brooks? / May 9, 2008 / 9:08 am

I loved hearing Dominique talk about the old Hawks–Celtics ’80s rivalry during the recent 1st round revival of it. Then the other day Brett Mullins a.k.a. DJ Sag of Port Huron, Michigan, emailed me this photo which included the Brooks signature “Human Highlight Film” joints from ‘86. Aa-ight! Figured I’d share. Spinning on his hand is the Puma Crew’s Torston Lovelace aka DJ IBT.

Who else remembers Brooks out there? I know you remember ‘Nique doing this!

    Wow… BROOKS! I never actually owned a pair but…

True Story Bob, I got to meet Nique at an event and got to talk to him for a while. After talking about how I thought it was wack sauce how he was left off the NBA @ 50 Top 50 of all time, I had to hit him with the Brooks reference.

“I had a poster you autographed from the Slam Dunk contest (83?) at Macy’s on 34th Street while you were doing a Brooks in store appearance over there.”

Nique (shocked/impressed/laughing) “Wow… Brooks… DAMN! You took it there huh!?”

He was a really cool cat and it was super fresh to casually kick it with a legend.

Dominique! Another slept on cat that casual fans don’t truly understand how great he was. I always tried to be in the building whenever the Hawks came to town. ‘Nique, Spud, Jon Battle, Kevin Willis, Doc Rivers, etc.

And the Brooks kicks bring back memories.

Thanks for bringing that back into my consciousness. Dominique and those Brooks joints had the old Omni on fire!

    haha . . .

well, the other well-known brooks endorser in my childhood, way before ‘nique, was yankess 3rd baseman craig nettles. he had the ill golden glove on the hot corner, and dove either side. he was a ‘human highlight film’ himself, for real. when i played little league baseball with the angelo’s braves in central park in ‘77, my choice of cleat was brooks, yo. word up. copped them down at paragon’s on 18th and b’way, which is a pillar of nyc sneaker history for those who don’t know. they’ve been there i think for 80 years selling kicks and sports equipment. my cousin’s boyfriend ray texador worked there. that’s how i got up on nike franchise and adidas top tens in ‘81. they had all the real deal performance hi-tops. still a good shop if you want to catch your friends with a curveball squash low cut or other ridiculousness. shhhhhhh
