First Look: AND1 Mosaic Mid / May 1, 2008 / 9:00 am

Coming in fall 2008, the AND1 Mosaic Mid is perhaps the last upper-tier shoe we will see from the brash brand for quite some time. Using fuel from the urban streetball craze, the company’s iconic “Player” logo was fairly ubiquitous in American households during the earlier part of the decade. Whether it was foreseeable or not, interest in the Mixtape Tour has waned, and a momentous shift in the sneaker world has taken place. Most cats today are wearing limited vulcanized shoes, expensive collaborations, and skateboard silhouettes. Conversely, AND1 rose to prominence in a time where hoops retro models and innovative performance designs were popular. To coincide with a lower level of sales, And1 will be renovating its product line, and will mainly focus on producing shoes that are under $65.

The Mosaic features a full-length TPU plate (TPU is a flexible form of plastic) that helps promote a more stable foot strike that is lower to the ground. Outside of the performance benefits, the Mosaic is arguably one of the more striking products I’ve seen in a while. The sneaker implements triangle indentations to augment forefoot and ankle support, along with a midfoot support panel that showcases an alluring pattern of cracked glass. But perhaps the most stupefying visual element of the shoe is the heel counter and midsole. Iridescent coral orange. Yes sir.
