Jigga. Jordan. Biggie. Charles Jones. Wait… The last name does not fit; we are talking about the “Kings of Brooklyn” right? While the first three resonate to any casual hip-hop or b-ball aficionado, Jones may not. Rewind the clock ten years and Brooklyn’s finest wasn’t with Roc-a-fella. “CJ” was leading the nation in D1 scoring for the second consecutive season at LIU-Brooklyn in the NEC conference putting up 30.1 and 29.0 ppg respectively from ‘96-’98. The college numbers thrust him into the NBA, ballin’ for the post-Jordan Bulls and the “Clip Show” for a couple years.
Since the League Pass days have gone, Jones can be found lighting up teams overseas in Argentina and stateside for the Strong Island Sound (ABA). When the weather is warm, the former Kenny’s Kings member (re-watch the 1997 documentary Soul In The Hole) takes it back to where it all started and hits the NYC blacktop. In ‘07, he led the Nike 1 squad to another Pro City @ Hunter College championship, and took Dyckman’s chip as a member of the mighty TNP. Still going hard after nearly ten years out of the spotlight, Charles Jones will always be remembered as a “Brooklyn King.”

nice job, justin! welcome to the crew and thanks for the contribution. i once got to be on the same squad with charles at a basketball city afternoon run. there were 3 nba dudes on the court and a bunch of overseas dudes (i had no bizness being there, they didn’t have enough) and jones completely took over. completely. his pull-up jumper off the dribble is wet from 30′ no exaggeration. only thing i’d say was that he didn’t help the other 4 of us play better. he was in a vacuum. in more recent years though, especially with TNP, he’s maturing into more of a team player. they’re really fun to watch cuz everyone scores double figures and no one goes nut.

Nice article man. I had no idea who Mr. Jones was. Couldn’t find a better shot of him (looks like he’s snacking on the ball like Chris Childs with donuts).

Take it from someone that grew up on Brooklyn’s many legendary playgrounds…Charles Jones was the illest. 360s, tomahawks, long range threes…he had it all. He was my favorite player growing up.
He led Division I in scoring two years in a row. His name should be held in the same breath with the best of them when playground legend names are spoken.

Great article, I’m a CJ fan as well. I loved in Soul in the Hole when they referred to him as someone who could go to school and play ball, much more versatile than booger was and this proved true.
Good info on him in Argentina
