(L-R) Tone Greer Jr. and Sr. Which one had a better game? Which one had a bald head first? Which one resembles ex-NBA player Brad Daugherty?!!!
In our Fall Issue #12, we featured the fearsome duo of Steve Burtt Sr. and Jr. Here are some other notable father-child NYC playground combos:
Tone Greer a.k.a. “The Skull” & Tone Greer Jr. a.k.a. “Toni Toni Toni” a.k.a. “Batman”
The Skull once held future NBA star Earl “The Pearl” Monroe to 12 points in a ’60s Pro Rucker game. This was when “The Pearl” was better known as “Black Jesus” (to give you an idea of how tough he was). Some 30 years later, Tone Jr. led the EBC at Rucker Park in rebounding and game IQ.
Lenzell Vaughn a.k.a. “Predator” & Kia Vaughn
Can you imagine what a dude who aptly earned the name Predator did to his playground opponents? His daughter Kia, a member of NCAA title game runner-up Rutgers U., definitely has some of those killer instinct genes, too.
Ronald “Terminator” Matthias & Quinton “T2” Hosley
Term may have been the greatest playground scoring legend of the ’80s and early ’90s. He also led the nation in scoring at a Florida juco. “T2” once scored 48 at Kingdome, did work at D1 Fresno St., and was the NIKE TOC MVP ‘08.
Bob McCullough a.k.a. “Onions” & his whole family
Mac Sr. was the nation’s second-leading scorer one season at Benedict College in the ’60s. Upon graduation, he organized the fabled Rucker Pro League at ’55th and took it to epic status through three decades. Bob Jr. once dropped 60+ in AAU action. Son Marvin ran with the Gauchos as a youth, then Iona College, and now rocks with the ABA’s Newark Express plus the Harlem Wizards. Nephew Jerry killed at U. of Pitt, and has been getting nice checks overseas for years now.
Larry Wingate & Jason Wingate
In the ’70s, Taft HS (Bronx) All-City guard Larry Wingate was a Holcombe Rucker Memorial Youth Summer League legend. He won every age division and was MVP four times. It was the toughest comp in NYC of that era. Between ‘99 and ‘02, his son Jason Wingate (Rice HS, Manhattan College) played with Riverside Church and won several HRM and AAU chips. He currently plays professionally in Puerto Rico.

How can you forget Kenny Satterfield Sr. & Kenny Satt Jr. We all know about Jr. H.S all American & an all American At U of Cinn under Bob Huggins. But ask any Seniors above about the father. And they will tell you that he was a problem.
