The Streets Have A Bag / Jan 22, 2008 / 10:22 am

There’s been a crafty NYC lefty guard giving herky jerky sauce to opponents at Rucker, West 4th, Tillary, and other tournaments since the early ’80s. Now in his 40s (and minus the ‘89 flat top), Javaughn McDaniel a.k.a. Roy is still active, particularly in Harlem’s Pelham Fritz 38 And Over League. His weaving on the court has led to a different type of stitch . . . apparel. He blessed me with the gym bag above a couple of weeks ago. Took a second to figure out all the doo-dads and tricks, just like guessing which way he’ll go on the court, but basically it’s a versatile joint you can carry two pairs of sneakers plus your unis to the next game with. For historical reference, the two string style brought me way back the late ’70s when the mighty Riverside Church Hawks AAU program would give their players gym bags in yellow and navy blue. Man–if I was only nice enough to make that squad! Got cut twice when i was 15, but if you had that piece on your back while walking into a park, basically you were getting picked for next, no questions asked. Riverside produced something like 40+ NBA players from the ’70s to mid late ’90s. Their windbreakers with the flaps were sick too!
