Molloy “The Future” Nesmith (middle in black) gets the pass from Steve “All Day” Burtt Sr. They combined for 69 points in their PFBL opener. Pictured left is Dedrick Erving (Boston U.’s all-time leading scorer) on D.

On Sunday, November 4, 2007, The NYC Marathon took over 5th Ave. in Harlem, and a couple of doors down at IS 201 (127th St. bet. Madison/Park) there was a very different kind of run going down as the Pelham Fritz 38 And Over League started it’s near 30th season. In the backcourt for the Lakers, Rookie Molloy “The Future” Nesmith joined another bonafide playground legend in Steve “All Day” Burtt Sr. Future dropped a game high 37 with consistent pull-ups from 25 to 28 feet out. Steve Sr. had a hard-nosed 32 by going to the line countless times off NBA jab steps and pump fakes. Yes, the father of Burtt Jr. (who broke the EBC @ Rucker Park scoring record this past summer with 68) was a former NBA player with the Suns, and although the younger generation may only know of him as coach of the And1 Mixtape Tour squad for a couple of years, the man can still go. And then some. His son, now playing pro in Italy, even admitted that if they were to play right now, he’d lose the 1 on 1 (check Bounce #12)!

You’d think the Lakers won easily, but they actually fought back from being down all 2nd half and finally went up with under 30 seconds to go. Their opponents, The Kings, had an arsenal themselves with Dedrick Erving, Ed Duncan (former Fairfield U. stand-out), Mike Drake (AIC), and Dahon Chung (Nike Battlegrounds 1 on 1 contestant ‘02).

In the second game of action, our own Bobbito Garcia a.k.a. Kool Bob Love led the Warriors with 22 points on 9 for 10 shooting in only 18 minutes of playing time! Go ‘head, Bob! He was also 4 for 4 from three. Warriors fielded two rookies including Vinnie Matos (United Brooklyn) and Bennie Timmons. They handed the Suns a swift L and look good for this season to contend.

PFBL games happen every Sunday @ 8:30am, 10:30am, 12:30pm, and 2:30pm. It may be the best basketball you can watch during the winter months, including what you see at Madison Square Garden. “AG” of Chicken Noodle Soup fame announces the contests in classic Uptown comedic fashion.

be advised that the person on defense against stevie burtt is “Drederick Irving” not Dedrick Erving. After he graduated form BU, he stuck around Boston and ran with our mens team the “Media All-stars” and we pretty much ruled the courts, tournaments and leagues from 1990 - 1993. Drederick was phenomenal, he should have played pro, at least overseas. We had another New Yorker, Tony DaCosta, who also played at Boston University and Duke Holtzclaw, a New Yorker, who attended Northeatern University and played with the late Reggie Lewis.
