Bombsquad Tournament Director Skip in front of his beginners group.
Over a decade ago, Uptown ballplayer Skip embarked on a mission to provide his community with a new approach towards basketball organizing. With a homecourt at 100th St. and 3rd Ave in Spanish Harlem, the Bombsquad was formed with humble attendance. Since then, it has become more than a place for the youth to learn competitive skills. It is a warm, weekly event for parents, kids, coaches, and onlookers.
I slid through 7/21 to peep the all-star festivities. There were over 300 co-ed players across three courts, and about the same amount on the sideline between parents and fans. One game featured first-time players of mixed age. The referee doubled as instructor, and he would stop the clock at any point to give advice. Bombsquad teams are also divided up by a draft. Parody is the norm. You don’t see blow-outs. Every kid gets a chance to participate and feel apart of the action.
I have to commend Skip for his unique approach because it’s proven successful. Some of the league’s alumni have wound up playing college and pro. But there is greater cause for applause. I’ve attended other youth leagues were there isn’t a parent in site. At Bombsquad, Moms and Dads are not only encourage to watch, but also actively invited to volunteer by coaching, handing out shirts, keeping the score, whatever. You can feel the love when you step in the playground. It’s a beautiful thing to witness, especially in the ‘hood.
Championship Day is this Saturday, August 11 starting at 10am. For more info, or to get your child involved (or volunteer yourself), contact Skip directly at 917 853 5823.
Also, peep MSG-TV’s “Summerball” series on Thursday, August 16th @ 5pm to view a feature on this league . . .
