A Day On The Park Bench With BallGurl / Jul 27, 2007 / 2:21 pm

T-Spoon and Me with our favorite magazine

I’m back again, hitting you with my own version of “In My Lifetime…” like only BallGurl could. I’ve noticed that my kicks and Metrocard have been racking up a ton of mileage recently. I’m getting great pics with my digital camera too. So, this week I want to put you on to some of the events that I’ve been attending and people I’ve been blessed to meet.

First up is my stop at West 4th St. about three weeks ago. While there, I bumped into Theresa Weatherspoon. For those who do not know, she is a former WNBA superstar that spent seven seasons as “general” of the New York Liberty and one with the LA Sparks. She is the leagues #2 all-time career assist leader, plus rocks an Olympic Gold Medal around her neck which she copped in the 1988 games.

Spoon suited up for Kim Jones’ Big East Ballers that day. She strolled into the Houston St. court all nonchalant, ready to go to work as usual. I stopped her to introduce myself and put her on to Bounce magazine issue #11. It turned out to be a smart move on my part. Spoon dug the mag and actually had heard of it before. She knew all about the piece done by playground legend Headache, who happened to be in the park too, back in issue #9. Both T-Spoon and Headache were mad cool. We spoke for a little bit and took some pictures. It was definitely a great experience for me.

Next up is my afternoon at MSG’s Last Man Standing one-on-one competition back on July 13th. It was the Harlem regional and one of the best events I’ve ever been to. It was crazy how they put up a basketball court in the McDonald’s parking lot. Guys were dunking on each other, shooting threes in their opponents face, and pulling off ill crossovers in the middle of 125th and Broadway. If there’s anyone that doesn’t understand, picture someone setting up a basketball hoop in the back of a popular restaurant that sits next to one of the busiest streets in your city. SICK!! What made it even better was getting to meet Larry Johnson. I’m a huge Knicks fan, so I definitely appreciated that. Plus, I got another BallGurl/NBA image when Smush Parker of the Miami Heat rolled through. That was truly a memorable day.

There have been many more great moments since then, and there will be many more to come. Keep checking back to find out about what Bounce has BallGurl getting into for this serious summer of ‘07…Peace!

Sorry Kemp, but I’m right on this one…At the exact time I published this, Smush closed the deal with the Heat. You can check nba.com news flash for the info.

    BallGurl, awesome stuff!

Only in NYC can you setup a hoop in a fast food restaurant’s parking lot and get awesome competition. Looks like it was a lot of fun too. You guys are lucky to have grown up in NYC…so many great tournaments.

This summer, to help aid my wallet and to combat my Chevy Blazer’s horrendous 14 MPG’s, I’ve dribbled everywhere within town, word to Pistol Pete. I’ve had so many people slow down, stop driving, or pull over (literally)while laughing and ask me why I’m dribbling. That’s probably been one of my favorite basketball moments this summer haha.

    Peace.
