A Day On The Park Bench With BallGurl / Jul 18, 2007 / 9:42 pm

Bounce Covers #1-#11

If any of you readers ever wanted to know what it’s like being a part of the Bounce: From The Playground team, I’ll put you on to a little of how we do. Since I am the newest member and have not been brainwashed yet, I think I can tell you all the truth from an absolute objective point of view…Psych!! That just wouldn’t be BallGurl.

My minimal experience as a Bounce staff member (it’s only been 3 1/2 weeks) has been ridiculously ill. I was hired to help out with the online editorial stuff for this website (bouncemag.com), and from day one it’s been bananas! For one thing, basketball and writing consume a lot of my time, but when those are your two biggest loves you welcome that with open arms. My responsibility is to hit up the various tournaments around the city and bring my findings back to be posted online. So far, so GREAT! I love it and I think you’re loving it too.

The vibe is incredible. I think I work for the coolest editing and publishing staffs in the world. There is more knowledge of the game of basketball floating around the Bounce/Dime offices than any where in this galaxy–real talk! Also, I’ve learned that there are a lot of people that love this game and the mag as much as I do. They’ll work their you-know-what’s off to see both succeed. That’s one of my favorite things about being on the Bounce squad.

In all honesty, working for Bounce is by far the most exciting job I’ve ever had. I can’t even begin to explain how much fun I’m having absorbing the NYC playground culture and presenting it to the rest of the world. As somebody who loves New York and loves basketball, this opportunity is everything I ever dreamed I could be doing as an aspiring sports journalist. Much love to Bounce, from BallGurl.

Ay yo B: Are those And 1s you’re rocking in that picture? I had two pairs of them joints, the whites and the blacks. They were stupid comfy.

And it’s great to have you on the team!

Love the pic of covers 1-11. Damn, I gotta get me some back issues! hope you guys get the ‘back issues’ section up and running soon. Bouncemag.com may be the only way I can get my hands on them..

  4. Bakar says:

P.S. Going full size for ish 11 is nice, but I’m kinda feeling the pint-size version better. My 2 cents.

Ballgurl - do you have a schedule of events that you’re going to next week? Hit us with your schedule!

  6. Jeremy Ripley says:

Jesse: You’re correct, those are the And 1 Tochillins. I had a pair when I was like 13…they were an awesome summer shoe. And 1 has some cool stuff on the way, keep on the lookout.

I still remember when Bob wrote in the cover article for issue one that when mainstream american businessmen would move onto a new fad (I believe he mentioned tadpole racing), playground ball would remain strong. Well, the only magazine purely dedicated to the playground game has remained strong, so you guys were true to your word.

Living in a small town in Wisconsin, I obviously do not get much exposure to the history and current happenings at the Rucker, Kingdome, etc. As a basketball fanatic who loves playing, watching, absorbing the game, I can instantly relate to Bounce because the playground game ensures that everyone can continue to play the game, work on their game, improve their game–regardless of race, age, skill level. I’ve had so many favorite articles, stories, pictures throughout these eleven issues.

Perhaps the strongest force drawing me to the playground game are the legends, that instead of putting in work in the NBA, put in work in the fast lane for that instant reward. I know that’s a bit opprobrious and bellicose, but one can’t help but wonder: What If Hook was in the league? What if Joe Hammond would’ve listened to Kareem (I was watching an ESPN docmentary on Joe a few years ago…I don’t remember the name, but does anyone know which one I’m referring to?) Did MJ really get taken to school by cats on the Chicago playgrounds? This aforementioned mysterious allure shall keep me coming back for more and more.

    Cheers.

    Bob!

Hey, I’m actually looking into applying for colleges right now. I’m thinking of majoring in either journalism, anthroplogy, brand marketing, or religious studies (quite the variety haha). I’ve been reading some dense books and manuscripts lately, and the vocab. is rubbing off.

It’d be truly dope if we all got together and played ball/kicked it one day.

    Peace.

  9. BallGurl says:

    Jeremy/Bob!!

Haha!! That would be fantabolous and ridicu-dope if we played a game of 21 or king of the court. I’m also working on my H-O-R-S-E tricks every day, so watch out!

The day I took that photo was actually the very first time I wore those Tochillins. I had them in the freezer for a while, and just decided to break them out. They’re crazy comfortable to walk around in too.

Good luck with your college search Jeremy…My college career is winding down, but it’s definitely been a great ride. I actually major in journalism and it’s a good look for me. If you take it up, you’ll probably dig it.

    Count the Basket,

    BallGurl
