T-Spoon Rocking the Stunner Shades @ W.4th

The sun was blazing at around 100 degrees over the weekend, but it still didn’t have the heat of Sunday’s 4:30 game at West 4th’s Nike Women’s Pro-Classic. The match-up between Kim Jones’ Big East Ballers and Tim House’s Lady Ballers brought serious fire power to Houston Street court in lower Manhattan. One of the most recognizable faces to suit up was Olympic gold medalist and former WNBA super point, Teresa Weatherspoon.

“Spoon” was running the show for the ‘East Ballers alongside strong talents Mercedes Dukes and Monique Blake. If the names sound familiar, it’s because Dukes did her thing at St. John’s University (NY) from ‘03-’06 and Blake handled business at Seton Hall (NJ) from ‘03-’07. With those ladies, and a number of other big names on the roster, coach Jones’ squad has been running the table downtown since opening day. Well, at least until Sunday afternoon.

House showed up with a monster lineup of his own that was saying “Oh No” to any possibility of losing. The Lady Ballers’ rotation included Renee Taylor, who is fresh off a two year stint in the ACC with the University of Miami Hurricanes, Stony Brook Point Milani Malik, and senior St. Bonaventure guard Priscilla “Snake” Edwards.

From jump ball, we knew that this game would be crazy. It was two ridiculously talented teams straight battling one another. All of the ladies were amped to play and the crowd’s excitement fed their energy even more.

A whole lot of strong drives to the baseline and pro style fast breaks later, Lady Ballers took the victory in a run away. Houston St. courts were theirs for the day. That’s how it goes down on the playground.

Ahhhhhhhhh-ight! Mad love to the Women’s West 4th St. league. i used to coach a squad there in 2003, mostly comprised of Sean Couch’s Varsity Ladies crew from John Jay College. I was trying to scheme a uniform at the end of the season, but our players were so loyal i couldn’t front on any of them. Janice and the whole crew do an incredible job running the show. I think it’s been the best Unlimited Women’s outlet in New York for some time now.

Oh, and a huge hug to Theresa Witherspoon. Ran fulls with her and “Headache” once down at Basketball City, we didn’t come off all day. As well as she shoots, she’s also very unselfish and knows how to pass really well. You the one!

    Bless,

For every casual male ballplayer out there who thinks, “Who cares about lady ballplayers; I could take them easy,” you best think again. Back in ‘97 I did a story for Vibe magazine where me and two of my homies played pros Crystal Robinson (Mystics), Sheri Sam (Indiana Fever) and Carolyn Jones (1992 Olympian) at the Reebok Sports Club. They waxed us 15-8 with deadly shooting, zero turnovers, rough picks and pinpoint backdoor cuts. (Making up for the L was the fact that Reebok laced us with the pre-release Iverson kicks, the first joints, all black, which to my knowledge have never been re-released.) I know what you’re thinking: Those dudes must have had no skills to lose to three girls. Trust me: You don’t want to play me now, let alone 10 years ago. Believe that.

    Jay Wash-

You talkin’ like you mad nice. Your squad only scored 8 points cuz you can’t go left, and you don’t see the floor well when dribbling. Not to take anything away from their victory, but let’s be real. You got smacked by some great ballplayers. take the L like i always do
when we play 1 on 1! haaaaa!
