Joe “Pops” Cruz of H.I.T.S Honored / Jun 25, 2007 / 3:20 pm

Joe “Pops” Cruz (RIP), the founder of Hoops In The Sun, had two plaques raised this past week. Orchard Beach and the NYC Parks and Recreation Dept. showed their appreciation for his passion and commitment by dedicating the H.I.T.S. Mens and Youth Division basketball courts in his name.

“Pops” passed away in 2004, but his sons, Joe Cruz Jr. and Randy Cruz, have continued the tradition he started. Hoops In The Sun has become one of the major summer basketball tournaments of the world. It boasts many of the NYC’s big time players, large crowds, and major corporate sponsorship. In fact, the Mountain Dew logo and H.I.T.S. brand name will appear on all gameballs.

H.I.T.S. is in its eighth season at Orchard Beach (Bronx, NY), and still going strong. It not only provides great entertainment, it bridges the gap between the youth and adults. There is a positive atmosphere and strong sense of family/community values. The legacy of Joe “Pops” Cruz lives on . . .
