I always loved tournament shirts/jerseys. I played in Uptown Challenge myself as a h.s. junior, senior, and college freshman. That was when the tournament was sponsored by And1 who made crazy nice reversible joints. My favorite was the 2003 baby blue/white top with the 5 train busting out of a basketball. It is one of my all time favorites, especially since I ride the 5 being from the BX. Plus, my team, coached by Mr. Jim Couch, won the ‘chip that summer.

i’ll never forget my first tournament jersey. summer of ‘81, holcombe rucker memorial, ran with kelsey stevens’ douglass projects c.c. midgets division crew. we were given deep purple unis (now you know the design inspiration for my aubergine nike af1 ‘kool bob love’ butters). pony was the sponsor. the shirts smelled so good! i was whiffing it before and after the game (i barely broke a sweat as i got no burn). i cherished that shirt. i wouldn’t put it in the dryer, favoring hang drying so the printing wouldn’t crack. i wanted to keep it forever.

i wonder where it is now!

Them Holcombe Rucker joints are sweet! I got a few jerseys from 3-on-3 tournaments, but they got cheap screenprinted designs on, so I won’t rock those. So far my favorite is a red adidas tournament shirt - I wore those until they fell apart. Got a pair of pink (yes, pink!) shorts once, I used it to get autographs from fellow ballers and stuffed it in my closet as soon as I got home. It should turn into a fossil any day now..
