Nike AF1 ‘butterscotch’ Kool Bob Love customs finished as camera crew records

Spent hours today acting like i was 17 years old and it was 1983 again. Director Thibault De Longville (Just For Kicks DVD) is working on a new documentary on the legacy of Nike Air Force 1s, and he asked me to recreate a customizing scene from my childhood. It was tedious, but the end result was illmatic. We only shot me painting the right shoe, and i don’t know when i’ll have another 2 hours free to tape up and spray the other side, but expect to see me killing a butterscotch Dulce De Leche outfit sometime this summer. Maybe at Kingdome’s season opener, where for the second season in a row i’ll be the celebrity guest announcer.

Its called an air conditioner. Turn it on once in a while. You got Thibault and his crew sweating bullets in there. They came to film, not to do birkam yoga….

  4. Bobbito says:

those are customs, painted them myself just for me . . . not coming out

  5. AG. says:

  7. VeRs says:

I just rocked the NEW Bobbito’s in the Aubergine/Beach Volt colorway today during a show and in the city and freaked mad people out including my main man Edzon from PATTA

one of the illest AF-1’s to come out this year - they are MAD comfortable!
    Peace from Amsterdam, Holland!!!

  10. Bamboozle says:

Shit is hot! Mad props. What up with doing a little tutorial for us youngbucks. I’d love to be able to flip some colorways of my own. How’d you get all the lines perfect? And did you add something to give it that final gloss?

  11. jazzy art says:

Yo Bob, I haven’t seen the last 2 colorways of the Kool Bob Love AF1’s out anywhere.. are they delayed??

  13. DJ says:

arent you too old for this?

  14. Bobbito says:

lots of questions, here are some answers:

yes, the aubergine kbl af1s released was pushed back to july. my pilgrims come out this june.

no, i’m not too old to still customize!

the gloss was thanks to a clean original surface and 2 coats of leather spray.

i love waffles. and falafels. maybe i’ll do the other side a brownish green to make it a true original creation. thanks for the inspiration.

    bless

    bob

  15. Backthen says:

hey,I am a big time sneakerhead, did you prep the shoe with acetone, or just spray it on, in short, what was the process, and what time period are looking at for the sequel to “Just For Kicks”.

    Thanks in advance

  16. matthew says:

what type of paints and coats and primers you used? cuz i havent seen any new afs in colours i want. and what paint do you use for the rubbers?

  17. khalis says:

man this is hot what came first the paint then the laether spray and wat kind of leather spray was it

  18. Bobbito says:

you can’t paint the rubber, just tape that section off and press down on it hard so that no spray leaks through. i used Magix Color leather spray. if it’s on a new shoe, you don’t need to prime or clean the surface. for mad more info, you should all peep my book ‘where’d you get those? new york city’s sneaker culture 1960-1987′ on testify. i wrote a whole section on the art of customizing, which i’ve been doing off and on since 1978 . . .

  39. Jevon Wilson says:

Ay Bobbito, Do You have any tips for mid-top Air Force Ones?

  40. Bobbito Garcia a.k.a. Kool Bob Love says:

    jevon-

all the same rules apply for mid, hi-tops or lows when customizing, only thing is the more leather, the longer you’ll have to take to tape. you should check the post i wrote titled ‘customizing 101′ in march, has more info on step by step. just type it in the searchbox near the top menu, hope that helps . . .
